Hello and thank you for reading my profile! I'm new here, but I have taught Latin for sixteen years to students from many different backgrounds.
While completing my Ph.D. in Medieval Studies at Notre Dame, I taught beginning and intermediate Latin to undergrads and grad students for nine years. During the summers I taught a very intensive Latin class to grad students and undergrads, who learned all of Latin grammar in just six weeks. I created lots of new course material to make the language easier for my students and I consistently received wonderful evaluations. Students often said I had made learning Latin much easier and more fun than they had expected, and a few of them have gone on to teach Latin themselves! This taught me that everyone can learn a new language, so long as their teacher pays attention to their individual needs and learning style. So, I always do!
I have also taught Latin in a public high school, in an Episcopal seminary, through an online teaching company, and most recently five years in a private high school. I'm always happy to customize my teaching to the specific needs and goals of each student, so that you can learn exactly what most matters to you.
I also share with students just how much wonderful fun it can be to learn a new language. Growing up in several different countries, I have always loved learning languages. (I have studied ten, most recently six intensive weeks of beginning Hebrew.) Each has a unique personality, and gives us access to a new world of culture and thought - learning Italian is like getting to travel to Italy! As an undergrad in Classics at Middlebury, I learned ancient Greek and Latin, and realized that ancient languages let us travel in time as well as in space: people just as real as you and I had hopes, fears, loves, dreams, jokes, wishes and ideas and sometimes they wrote them down. If we learn their language, then we can witness their experiences, many centuries later. That's a wonderful gift, and one that I would love to share with you.
