Before retiring, I spent my last 15 years at General Motors providing daily guidance to young engineers (typically less than 5 years out of college), on the proper use of physics in developing solutions to quality and customer satisfaction issues. Earlier in my career, I was given a Career Aptitude Test with the results indicating teaching was my highest potential. This seemed right to me as I had always felt best when I was helping others understand how to solve problems using the skills they learned in college.

While a sophomore in college, I was given the opportunity to tutor candidates in the Buick Skilled Trades Apprenticeship program. This activity was providing math tutoring to high school students without college preparatory courses, but needed higher level math skills for this career path. Of those students, 95% went on to enter the program and successfully complete the training.

I graduated from high school in the top 90th percentile, while taking AP (advance preparatory) courses in Math and Science. I achieved an ACT score of 32, taking the test only once. While in high school I started and presided over the Chess Club and Chemistry Club. Kettering University gave me credit for both Calculus I and II from my high school studies. I graduated from Kettering University with a 3.95 out of 4.0 GPA and MSMM and BME degrees.

My tutoring approach has a heavy emphasis on applying math techniques to real world problems. I believe this helps the student better relate to the math concepts being taught. I provide multiple practice problems which helps to ingrain the techniques being taught. Where a student is struggling, I ask them to explain how they were taught in class which helps me identify areas needing

I instruct K-8 students at a local Mathnasium facility two days a week. I specialize in preparing middle school students for more advanced math they'll encounter in High School. I use Saxon Math tools. I strongly recommend long-term commitments to ensure success of the student. I support use of homework to reinforce topics learned.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I am currently tutoring three middle school students online in Pre-algebra and Algebra 1 curriculum. The parents of all three have indicated they want to continue with me throughout the upcoming school year. I have tutored more than ten (10) high school students in SAT math and ACT math this past year. These tests require a solid understanding of Algebra concepts and techniques. I have been an instructor at two local Mathnasium Centers for the past three years. At those centers I have been assigned high school students primarily. These students typically need assistance in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. I used algebra on a daily basis in applying physics concepts at my work as an automotive engineer at General Motors for more than 35 years (since retired). My strength is my ability to simplify concepts to my students. I have tremendous patience with my students which allows them to relax and focus on learning.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I tutored an Honors student taking Algebra 2 this past school year. She received an "A" for the year. I have tutored more than ten (10) high school students in SAT math and ACT math this past year. These tests require a solid understanding of Algebra concepts and techniques. I have been an instructor at two local Mathnasium Centers for the past three years. Geometry,

Geometry

As a mechanical engineer, I used geometry almost daily in applying physics concepts. I tutored high school and middle school students in geometry. I excelled in geometry in high school, doing geometry proofs my sophomore year. Geometry concepts do not change over the years!
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

As an engineering graduate, I have taken more than three levels of algebra to qualify. I have tutored more than 20 different middle school students in pre-algebra topics for a total of more than 100 hours. I tutor students by providing multiple problems per topic so each topic is mastered with confidence. I currently instruct at a local Mathnasium, helping middle school and high school students with pre-algebra concepts.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I had AP calculus as a Sr. in High School. I received college credit for Calculus 1, then took Calc 2 and Calc 3 in Engineering college.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have tutored almost a dozen students in SAT math and ACT math. I have used the last 3 years' Princeton SAT handbooks for practicing test questions/problems. I provide extra test problems for each student based on the difficulties they have with the various types of problems.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I have spent over 40 hours with The Princeton Review "Cracking the ACT". When I took the ACT some time ago, I took it once only and received a composite score of 32. The strategies to score well are easy to learn. I believe in spending time taking mini practice tests to help the student get familiar with time pressure and learn where further work and assistance is needed.

Great tutor! I'm glad I met with him.

He was very patient and understanding, and took his work seriously. He always came prepared, and I felt like we always got a lot done when we met. I'm definitely going to message him again if I ever need more math help in the future.

You cannot expect to be a teacher when you are a parent

Well worth with the time and money to help my kid. As a parent, it is impossible to do it all on my own. I need time with my other kids to help them. It’s good to know I can leave my math tasks to Steve. Great communication.
