I have been an educator for 30+ years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education. I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. Also, I hold a certificate in Early Education of the Handicapped and a certificate in Developmentally Handicapped K-12. I have attended multiple conventions, workshops and seminars on Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Autism and Behavioral Disorders.

I have experience in developing and implementing Sensory Diets. I use Positive Behavior Supports to modify behavior. My area of specialty is special education and children that have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. I also work with children who have behavioral disorders. Presently, I tutor two students who have not been successful in a traditional style classroom. I incorporate sensory integration and art into their daily and weekly lessons.

I believe that teachers are not only responsible for teaching subject matter, but are also responsible for motivating children to learn. I incorporate hands on, experiential learning activities so that students will remember what they have learned. My students enjoy having lessons with me and look forward to their next session.

Making learning fun and incorporating strategies to help students remember important concepts is how I teach. Supporting parents in learning how to assist their child is another area that I emphasize.

Together we can be successful! I have never given up on a student and I believe all students can learn.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

ADD/ADHD: I have homeschooled my own son who is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Plus, I have taught children with autism for 30 years and these children often have a co-morbid diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. Autism: I have taught and consulted in the public school for children on the autism spectrum. I have also led parent groups and spoke at trainings on autism. Phonics: I have an elementary degree in education and have taught multi-handicapped children basic phonics and sight words. I am familiar with A-Zreading.com and use this site frequently with struggling readers. Special Needs: I have taught in the field of special education for 30+ years and have experience with many types of disabilities. I have learned how to modify activities for students with physical disabilities. I have also modified many activities for children with developmental disabilities. Dyslexia: I have experience with children with reading disabilities and have purchased my own resources to educate myself on how I can reach children with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
