Having first learned Spanish from and spoken Spanish with native Spanish-speakers during my childhood, I have spoken Spanish most of my life. In addition, I have been trained and have worked as a professional translator for the past 45 years (Russian, Spanish, German) as well. I have also spent time and/or lived in the cultures of the languages noted and continue to use those languages with native speakers. Most recently (2011-2013) before completely retiring from teaching, I taught Spanish (K-10) at the Gillingham Charter School in my hometown of Pottsville, Pa. Prior to that, I also taught Spanish, Russian German and ESL (English as a Second Language) at the Valley Forge Military Academy and College (Wayne, Pa.) for 26 years, the last 6 years of which I was the Foreign Language Department Chair as well. During those 26 years, I also tutored students from VFMA&C as well as from surrounding public schools and universities such as Villanova and Temple. I received my Pennsylvania Teacher Certification in Russian, Spanish and German from the University of Pennsylvania (Graduate School of Education). My B.A. is in Russian from Penn State. I completed advanced studies in Spanish and German at Penn State University, Villanova University and Eastern College . I earned two Masters Degrees from Temple University; one in Liberal Arts and one in Spanish. Whether in class or tutoring, my students consistently expressed how satisfied they were with my teaching style because they really learned the language by using it. All who visited a country of the language I taught them, reported that they had no problem communicating with native speakers. Also, most of my students who continued their language studies in college, informed me that they were far ahead of students from other schools. I was nominated four times by my fellow teachers and department chair for a teacher of the year award. Finally, after having been nominated by a number of my

I began teaching ESL (classroom instruction and private tutoring) in 1979 at the Valley Forge Military Academy. In 1985, I also taught ESL at Temple University to undergraduate foreign students. Since retiring from VFMA in 2005, I have continued private tutoring in ESL. My educational background in linguistics and foreign language teacher education (undergraduate studies [Penn State Univ.] and graduate studies [Temple Univ. and Univ. of Penn]) exceeds the required coursework for ESL teacher certification. That background includes specifically: undergraduate minor studies in linguistics at Penn State Univ. (B.A.); graduate studies in linguistics at Temple Univ. (M.A.); and foreign language teacher certification coursework at the Univ. of Penn (Graduate School of Education).

Below is a brief summary of the most relevant information on my education and work history. I lived two years with a native German host family in a German village in Germany. No one in that village spoke English. During that time, I was tutored in German by native Germans from German universities, my German host family and many other local native Germans. While still in Germany, I was also enrolled in formal courses in German sponsored by the U.S. government and taught by native German professional instructors. After returning from Germany, I pursued a university program to become a certified foreign language teacher. I completed all of the required coursework in German at the Pennsylvania State University, Villanova University and Eastern University as well as the required graduate teacher education coursework at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. I subsequently received my foreign language teacher certification in German (PA./ K-12) from the University of Pennsylvania . My classroom teaching and private tutoring experience has been from kindergarten through college levels. My teaching method is eclectic, which enables me to streamline instruction to the specific needs of the student. My education and work background are as both a professional translator and teacher (classroom teacher and private tutor) spanning 30 years.

I was trained and certified by the Defense Language Institute as a Russian translator. I subsequently worked in the Army Security Agency as a professional translator with an above Top Secret security clearance. After that, I received a B.A. in Russian from the Pennsylvania State University. During my undergraduate studies at Penn State, I also studied Russian literature and linguistics at the University of Leningrad in Russia/USSR through a United Nations scholarship (granted on the basis of a nationally competitive series of comprehensive proficiency exams). Following my undergraduate studies at Penn State, I taught Russian at the Valley Forge Military Academy and College for most of my twenty-six years at VFMAC. During that time, I also obtained my permanent Pennsylvania Teacher certification in Russian from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. In addition, I have continued to work as a Russian interpreter/translator for various Defense Department agencies and major corporations since my service with the Army Security Agency. Also, since my service with ASA, I have worked as well as a private tutor in Russian.

During elementary school, I began learning Spanish from native bilingual speakers and speaking with them daily in Spanish. Once in high school, I studied Spanish formally for three years. Within a year after graduating high school, I passed the Spanish translator proficiency test at the Defense Language Institute. Several years later, I pursued a university program to become a certified foreign language teacher. I completed all of the required coursework in Spanish at the Pennsylvania State University, Villanova University and Eastern University as well as the required graduate teacher education coursework at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. I subsequently received my foreign language teacher certification in Spanish (PA./ K-12) from the University of Pennsylvania . Excellent and knowledgable tutor!

Harold is an experienced and extremely knowledgeable tutor who is patient and open to my input as well. I appreciate how his communicative approach is very practical, yet based strongly in grammar guidelines and other linguistic basics. Furthermore, he draws from his rich life experience (including many years as a classroom teacher) to enhance our lessons. I have been so impressed with his prompt communication, thoughtful lesson planning and follow-up, and overall professionalism. I have learned so much during our enjoyable sessions together!
