I have a B.A. in Dramatic Art and a certificate in American Sign Language.

I have tutored low literacy adults and enjoy the discovery when someone 'gets it'. I also teach English as an Other Language to adults. Studies do not come easy for me, so I understand that sometimes people need extra help or a different viewpoint to understand something new. I find that many times students fall behind because they find the material dull. I believe in breaking complex problems into components to make the subject understandable.

My goal is to present material in a way that the student will understand the basics and be able to move to the next level with confidence.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Dramatic Art and studied speaking skills, linguistics and phonetics in pursuit of a career in the theater. I have performed in numerous community theater and small professional theater productions of the years. I know (and can explain) techniques for improving speech quality and calming nerves when having to face a group.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I teach ESOL by total immersion. I tailor each session to the needs and vocabulary of the student. I don't spend a lot of time explaining grammar, but use grammar and vocabulary to help students reach their goal. My training in theater arts has given me the tools to teach students American pronunciation as part of their vocabulary lessons. I have had the privilege to teaching ESOL to financial managers, journalists, pharmacists, accountants and other professionals. I always remember that my students are intelligent adults who have come to learn another skill. Most importantly, I believe that the learning experience for adults should not be a chore but something they look forward to each time that we meet.
Grammar,

Grammar

I love English grammar. Although the fashion is to promote fluency without focusing on how or why the language works. I teach students the basic eight parts of speech, then show students how each piece fits together with the others. I teach students how to make sure that subject/verb match and the importance of antecedents when using pronouns. My students learn that grammar is the foundation for their expressions, not simply rules that have no place in their communication. I teach students that grammar is a puzzle and my method is to show a student how to put the puzzle together to make many beautiful pictures.

I am a former volunteer with the Washington Literacy Council where I tutored low-literacy adults and trained other tutors on using the 'Wilson' method of reading. The Wilson method provides a structured way to using sounds to read and spell and also encourages students to write. The Wilson method is adaptable to all age levels and is great tool for those who wish to begin a life of reading pleasure.

Knowledgeable, Attentive & Great Tutor!

Professor Moire is a very versed, smart, and authentic tutor. Her class is amazing! It is a fun and interesting class to be enjoyed, without loosing the focus on the subject. Professor Moire genuinely motivates me, which encourages me to move forward in my study. When we work together on my assignments, for instance, she goes through with me diligently. If my job is really good she compliments me. But, when I have to do a better job, she corrects me with firmness and patience, which I appreciate. I am an immigrant student who is taking credit class at College. I highly recommend professor Moire for those who needs help with English classes, either for ESL or credit classes. Furthermore, if you are seeking for assistance with your citizenship preparation or in your professional education to work on your English she is the one!

Great tutor full of energy

She is always full of energy and makes me happy. Although I'm not good at English expression as an ESL student, she always makes me comfortable speaking English and listens to my English and then corrects my pronunciations and expressions clearly. Also, She has a lot of background knowledge about various fields, so I learn a lot from her. She is an experienced and great tutur. Thank you Moire!
