I received a Master's degree in Science Education from Rutgers Graduate School of Education, with an undergrad degree in Physics (Math/Education double minor). I've been tutoring privately, with various Rutgers organizations, and with a range of tutoring companies since 2010, with almost 8000 hours of satisfied students in all manner of subjects.

My Master's degree gives me a unique way of approaching the subjects of Physics and Math, by focusing on the complex interlocking equations and explaining them at their conceptual level. If a student can get a grasp on the concepts in Physics and Mathematics, most problems afterward will become an overall simpler calculating experience, making homework, tests, and even just looking at the world around you and understanding the patterns a fuller, correct, and more complete experience.

As such, I always try to include real-world examples of difficult concepts, so that the student can see this difficult idea in action, and begin to form an idea of how it works. Whenever time allows, I try to set aside the end of lessons to have my students flip the script and teach me what we went over that day. This back and forth with students who start as novices and grow to this level of skill and understanding validates everything about why I tutor. I hope to get the chance to work with you and have that same kind of learning experience.

Subjects I currently teach:
Math: Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Honors Calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC
Physics: Physics, Honors Physics, AP Physics 1/2, AP Physics C Mechanics (AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism will only be taught if the student has completed certain pre-reqs, feel free to reach out to clarify this)
Test Prep: SAT Math, ACT Math

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

With students ranging from 7th grade to college seniors and beyond, I have taught a large number of memory tricks and problem solving techniques for how to deal with numbers and their properties. Focus has been on seeing patterns in numbers/variables so that simplification can be made into a easy task, and what facts are required to be memorized so that future problems can be seen in different, less confusing ways.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Over fifteen years, I have developed many tips, tricks, and methods to help understand and implement the various skills required in Algebra 2 courses. These methods have been successful with students ranging from 7th graders to college seniors and beyond.
Calculus,

Calculus

Through my education in Physics, I have become very familiar with calculus, since it is the language Physics was written in. Going through the mechanical aspect of Calculus, with an eye toward applications of seemingly theoretical constructs, has helped many of my students not only understand the how of Calculus, but also the why.
Geometry,

Geometry

Through my Physics studies, I have developed a keen understanding of how shapes and pictures influence learning. I try to show how each line of a shape is just one part of the whole, and develop a view of geometry that will be very helpful in future math/science endeavors.
Physics,

Physics

AP Physics is my specialty, having worked with the AP Physics curriculum since its revision in 2014. I've worked with students in all levels of Physics classes in private one-on-one sessions over the last decade. In addition to private tutoring, I helped run 3 semesters of a college-level Physics class focusing on new ways to teach and get students excited about Physics. These private sessions and in-class experiences have given me an innovative concept-based style to encourage understanding in both a mathematical and global context which I have found are very effective at helping students understand Physics.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have guided many incoming freshmen to Rutgers through the basics of equations, numbers, variables, exponents, so that when they take more math classes later, they have the firm grasp and understanding they need to prosper.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Working with students in both high school and college, I have helped numerous students understand the ins and outs of pre-calc, with effective tips and methods for understanding and retention. An additional focus on how the actual tools in Pre-Calc will help the student prep for a real calculus class can also be helpful to some students who are planning on continuing in math past pre-calc.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I was a Kaplan SAT Prep teacher for two years, so in addition to my approach to general mathematics concepts gained from my educational background, I have a number of test specific tips and tricks to help students get the highest score possible with the least amount of stress

Trigonometry

Through a varied instructional technique that allows for the proper viewing of the relationships of triangles to the real world, I try to make a student see how sides of any figure all follow the same basic rules. I've taught trig techniques and tricks to almost every math/physics student I've met, given the prevalence of triangles in vectors, both in mathematics and Physics.

One of the best physics teachers

Working with Josh made Physics turn from seeming insurmountable to a subject that I enjoyed learning about and practicing. He was always very patient, approachable, and he knew when I would have the skills necessary to solve a problem on my own and when I would need his input, using examples and asking questions to help me figure out what the next step needed to be. I can't thank him enough for his help in Physics Honors and AP Physics C. He helped me learn the importance of divergent thinking when I was approaching physics problems, that I knew more than I thought when it came to working through problems, and taught me how physics concepts were all interconnected, helping me work through questions that at first seemed impossible to answer. He was the best physics tutor I could ask for. Thank you!

Honors physics

Josh did a great job explaining all the concepts that were confusing for my daughter. She ended up with an A on her test. Will meet weekly- if available. Great tutor!

Sarah, 5 lessons with Josh

Current and relatable

My daughter loved Josh because he was young and current. He made the lesson relatable and enjoyable. She liked the fact that Josh's commentary about math was exactly how she felt about it.

Melissa, 16 lessons with Josh

Very knowledgeable

Josh helped my son understand what he needed to know for his college calculus course for computer science. He was ver instrumental in assessing what my son needed in order to succeed.

Dawn Marie, 3 lessons with Josh

awesome tutor

Definitely my favorite tutor on this app, super patient and effective in teaching concepts about physics and not just doing the work in front of me.

Isabel, 2 lessons with Josh

Thoughtful and knowledgeable tutor

Josh was very personable and helpful during our tutoring lessons. The process of meeting with a tutor can be daunting and intimidating; however, Josh made math relatable and did not make me feel self-conscious. He really knows his stuff- happy I made the decision to book him.

Elizabeth, 2 lessons with Josh

Knowledgeable and patient

My son has been having a hard time with pr precalculus this semester virtually. Josh was able to determine what he'd learned wrong and set him on the right footing as he heads into finals. Will definitely book again

Charle, 4 lessons with Josh

Knowledgeable and instructive

Josh was helpful and supportive with my son's instruction today. He is going to be reteaching Material not previously mastered and reviewing current material. Many thanks.

Beth, 11 lessons with Josh

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Josh reviewed how springs work in conjunction with the conservation of energy, and the use of Newton's second law in oscillatory and gravitational problems. He is illuminating the fundamentals of physics for my son.
