Phonics,

Phonics

Quite simply, phonemic awareness is first learning that letters have corresponding sounds, and then honing the ability to blend those sounds in order to begin to read in English. As a teacher who's worked with children and new-American English learners, I have extensive experience teaching phonics: sounding out letter-sound correspondence and thus learning how to read and write well. In addition, I have many excellent tools at my disposal to help make the process fun and memorable, and have been greatly rewarded helping many students succeed in becoming proficient readers.
Reading,

Reading

It's cliche but true - reading opens up worlds...Some of the most valuable and integral parts of language, culture, and brain development are contained in and achieved through reading. To be able to accurately read, understand, and utilize texts is hugely significant and beneficial. As a highly trained teacher/tutor, I have had tremendous and rewarding success helping multitudes of students improve their English reading skills, and take great joy in doing so.
Spelling,

Spelling

Spelling is one of those things that isn't always 'developmental' - it can take a lifetime to get it right! Excellent spelling skills are an integral part of good writing, and serve a purpose throughout life. English is a wonderful but sometimes frustrating language: it has a vast vocabulary, and spelling can be very unpredictable as a result. Still, good spelling habits and knowledge can definitely be taught, and with my 20+ years experience as a teacher/tutor to children and adults, I have the skills and expertise to give your students the tools they need to be great spellers, and thus both writers and better readers, too!
Study Skills

Study Skills

As a master teacher, with 20+ years of experience working with both youth and adult learners, I understand the necessity and value of teaching good study skills, and am adept at doing so. ACT English,

ACT English

The English portion of the ACT tests both English mechanics and usage: punctuation, grammar, proper sentence structure; as well as rhetorical skills: identifying the author's purpose or tone, what constitutes good organization, along with polished style or consistency in the passage. These are skills that take real practice to identify and master, and require a truly skilled teacher/tutor to help students reach that aim. As such a teacher/tutor, I am pleased to offer my services through WyzAnt, and look forward to working with your student, soon!
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

All tests can be conquered! More than the content of the given test, students are dealing with the style and specific skills to be tested - these things can indeed be taught, learned and mastered! The ACT Reading test examines the student's ability to find the main idea of a passage, make inferences, and understand vocabulary in context. It uses passages from Social Studies, Natural Sciences, Prose, and Humanities texts. I have worked with many students over my 20+ year career and helped them in their test preparation by teaching them both psychological as well as practical readiness - with great results.
English,

English

As someone who adores the English language and has been teaching it for over 20 years, I have a passion for sharing what I know with students, have great success with my teaching methods as a result, and can transmit the tools for good use and command of the language (punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, appreciation of literature, strong reading/writing skills) very effectively. The richness and fun that are inherent to English, as well as having good reading and writing ability are things that I love to share with students!

Literature,

Literature

The canon of broadly accepted great Western novels and authors indeed stand the test of time, and even if one doesn't absolutely love all of their works, or the messages contained in them, they lend great understanding to valuable popular culture, and remain as pillars of certain cultural references that can positively inform us all. This is my approach to literature, and characterizes my appreciation of it - this is what I have been successfully able to convey and perhaps even imbue my own students with, through the years.

Also, I am adept at putting students at greater ease when it comes to test taking, and helping them understand that it is not overly complicated to figure out what they are dealing with as far as the structure and requirements of the SAT/ACT.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing segment does matter, and there is convincing evidence to prove that how well you do on this portion of the test can be a predictor for your level of success at college or university; more and more schools are putting stock in this, too. Also, good writing skills (idea generation, organization, coherence, grammar/mechanics, and style) will serve you in many capacities, throughout your life. Additionally, the specific requirements and structure of academic writing can and should indeed be taught. In my extensive career as a teacher/tutor focused on English writing, as well as reading skills, I have many useful methods and tools to impart to students, and have helped my students gain real confidence and greater ability to write well, which is exactly what is needed to ace this important part of the SAT test.
