Hello,

I am interested in tutoring dedicated, flexible students who would like to learn more about English composition, speaking, creative writing, or literature. I am a past professor from Chatham University and Duquesne University (Pittsburgh, PA), where I taught composition, creative writing, literature, ESL, and more. My graduate degree (2011) is a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing from Chatham University with a specialized Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing. I received my undergraduate degree (2005) from Oregon State University in English Literature and Creative Writing. I graduated both universities with honors.

I can help students with a wide range of projects for native and non-native English speakers, including: academic essay writing, public speaking, reading, and creative writing, along with spoken English, writing, reading, and grammar skills for the non-native speaker. I also work with students on the writing and reading portions of GRE, TOEFL, ACT and SAT tests.

I prefer to work with adults and young adults, high school freshman and up. The majority of my students have been college or graduate school students, but I have also worked with several high school students in all areas of writing, literature, and history. I spent five years as writing, literature, and grammar instructor, and as an editor and ESL instructor in Pittsburgh, PA before moving back to Colorado to be closer to home. My teaching experience includes technical, creative, formal, and grant writing. I also specialize in nonfiction writing and in American Literature (poetry, fiction, nonfiction). I have also worked as a teaching assistant and as an intern for a travel agency as a travel brochure writer. Other experience includes work as a firefighter, a small business owner, and a Forest Service Ranger. I currently work full time for the US Forest Service.

My tutoring methods typically include a lot of leading questions. I like the student to form his or her own conclusions, and to learn the material based on h

GRE,

GRE

I can help students with the reading and writing portions of the GRE; whether your concern is time, grammar, writing skills, reading skills, sentence/essay construction, or deconstructing the GRE test language, I can help. I have years of experience as a tutor and as an instructor helping students with their essays and reading skills, and I'd love to help you, too!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I teach public speaking in the university classroom, and would love to help you improve your public speaking approaches and confidence! I have taught public speaking for four years, helping students with a wide range of public speaking skills, from writing speeches to performance techniques. I have also worked closely with several ESL classrooms that needed help speaking clearly so that audience members could understand them.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have worked as a conversational ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor off and on for eight years. I work with individuals and groups, for all skills (listening/speaking, reading, writing, grammar, etc.). I have taught ESL at the college and high school level, and also to individual adults who want to improve their skills.
Grammar,

Grammar

Ah, grammar. Nobody's favorite but mine. Contrary to popular belief, grammar can be made easy, and I love to help students unlock the mystery. As a tutor and an instructor, I work closely with students to develop targeted grammar points that are in the way of their progress as writers and speakers of English.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

I have worked as a professional editor in many capacities, ranging from glossy publications to PhD dissertations. The majority of my experience as a tutor and instructor is with high school and college composition/literary essay. While I have served as a technical editor for scientific material and highly technical papers, I have gone beyond basic technical editing into content editing for history dissertations, masters theses, creative essays, and professional publications.

Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

My philosophy with grammar is a content-based approach. Simply memorizing words will not take us far in life--we must be able to identify them in context, to use them in their various applications, and to understand the intricacies of their definitions. I prefer to teach vocabulary along with reading and writing. This dynamic approach provides various types of exposure, rather than a single memorization-style approach that has been proven to fail us time and again. Memorization is not my goal. Comprehension and application are.

By saying I am certified to teach English, this means all aspects of the language: writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and reading. Literature

While my specialization is in American literature, I am also happy to aid students with British lit and even translations. Studying literature is never a stand-alone process; students need to write to comprehend what they read. In the classroom, I will work with you to develop your literary analysis skills, and show you how to demonstrate this knowledge in your academic essays.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

As a reading instructor at Chatham University, I am well aware of the requirements/expectations for college placement tests. The SAT reading section is looking for a student's knowledge of vocabulary, comprehension, and ability to recognize main ideas and details. As it goes with most things in life, reading takes practice--especially for a test that is seeking such a specific skill set. I love helping students to unlock the mysteries of reading, especially when the outcome of the test is so important!
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

I would argue that writing skills are the most valuable of all categories on the SAT. Strong communication is a must in today's world, and there is nothing I enjoy more than helping students to understand what the SAT graders are looking for in a good essay. As a college writing instructor, I am well-versed in helping young people achieve college-level writing. It's hard work, but few things in life pay off so much as the ability to write clearly.

A great teacher!

We are so lucky to have found Lorena. A professor herself, she is the perfect blend of "cool" for my teenager, with the experience and talent as she is a teacher. I could not ask for a better fit for my child. She is able to not only tutor, but teach concepts. We feel so blessed!

Professional Tutor!

She knows what you need exactly and provides all the stuff that you need. Most of all, she is so patient with a student that you don't have to be nervous for making mistakes. Moreover, she is a great writing teacher! She even finds the small mistakes from the papers that my kids bring from the school (These are from their teachers!!) I have never thought that a writing could be so helpful for my speaking skill but it is!!!! Thanks Lorena!
