I am a certified math teacher with over 20 years of experience in the traditional classroom setting, with most of that being overseas, working in an American school with an international student body. During those 20 years, I have taught everything from pre-algebra to AP Calculus. My strengths are in clarity of explanation and in helping students to troubleshoot in areas that often trip them up. In addition to classroom teaching, I have done a fair amount of 1-on-1 private tutoring with homeschooling families here in the states and have gained exposure to a variety of curriculum and instructional resources.

I love working in the classroom, but I also thoroughly enjoy the one-on-one interaction that takes place with tutoring. I welcome questions from my students, not only because it helps me to understand where they are having issues with the material, but it also helps them to engage in their own academic progress. It gives them a voice with me as their teacher/tutor, and it makes the process of tutoring more of a "we" effort than a "me" effort.

I enjoy what I do and I love explaining math concepts to students and seeing the "lightbulb" go on. I am patient with my students, seeking to encourage them in any ways that I can, but I am also firm with them in that I do make them work. As one who stands behind the idea that what is learned through self effort and self initiative will stick with a student far better than that which is simply handed to them by their teacher, I desire to encourage learning strategies that my students will "own", thus helping them to become lifelong learners.

If you are need of help and desire to master this "language" called Mathematics, I would love to come along side and support you in this endeavor. If you have questions about my experience, training, background, etc., feel free to contact me and, if you are comfortable with letting me step in to help you out, I would welcome the opportunity!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra for many years in the traditional classroom setting as well as in private tutoring sessions, mainly with homeschooling families. This has given me opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of curricula. One of my strengths is clear communication and explanation of the material. I am patient and, if a student struggles with a particular concept, I look for various ways to explain the concept until it makes sense to the student. I am certified by the state of Maine for secondary mathematics education, grades 7-12.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

In my 20+ years of teaching experience, I have taught Algebra II multiple times, primarily in the traditional classroom setting but also in private 1-on-1 tutoring. My approach to teaching is not only to enable students to accomplish the "what" of advanced algebra but also to help them understand the "why" behind the skills, concepts, and procedures. I welcome students' questions and input as they guide my explanations to help students achieve mastery of the material.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have taught AP Calculus AB for 12 years and the majority of my students receive scores of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam. Although I do employ the use of technology in my instruction, I also strive for students to be able to do calculus without a calculator when it is possible and feasible to do so, as in finding derivatives of polynomials functions, determining equations of tangent lines, integrating via a variety of techniques, etc. I also encourage a step-by-step process in problem-solving with analysis of the given information first, then choice of the right technique, and then implementing that technique to achieve the desired result, checking one's work when done to verify that it is correct.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have taught geometry for many years during my 20+ years of teaching experience, both in the classroom and in 1-on-1 tutoring. Topics have included properties of triangles and other polygons, formulas for area, volume, etc., similarity and congruence of polygons, and formal proofs in a variety of formats. I emphasize use of the right "tool" of geometry ( a formula, a property, etc.) to make the job easier to accomplish and encourage students to avail themselves of ALL the tools in their geometry tool box.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have taught pre-calculus on multiple occasions during my 20+ years of experience. I love helping students solidify the skills and concepts needed not only for the problem-solving aspect of the course itself but also for laying a solid foundation for moving on to calculus. Pre-calculus incorporates "tools" from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry in a variety of problem-solving scenarios and I enjoy helping students apply those tools ( "the right tool for the right job") to get the job done.

I love helping students understand and apply the "tools" from algebra and geometry in various problem-solving scenarios to see how the math really works to enable a problem to be solved. I encourage students to break a problem down into its various parts and tackle the problem one step at a time, applying the right tool for each stage of the process.
