I decided to make a difference in the life of a child by becoming a tutor for students in elementary and middle schools. I have expert knowledge of biology due to my 30-year plus career as a fisheries biologist and natural resource specialist. Following my science career, I felt there was a great need to also help students with their reading skills, so I started volunteering and ultimately worked in an elementary school as a reading mentor and teacher. With my variety of life experiences, I felt tutoring in both biology and reading would be a great way to help students succeed in life.

I am a graduate from Michigan State University with a Masters of Science degree in fish and wildlife biology, and also have a Bachelor's in biology from California State University. I worked hard in college and completed a very novel thesis project on salmon fish quality and demand in the Great Lakes of the United States. After getting my Master's degree, I spent 3 months aboard a West German fishing boat in Alaska which led to a publication about how the boat's factory used fish, which were previously unpopular, to make frozen fillets to sell in the United States and in Europe. I also have a Bachelor's degree in economics in my first college (University of California) when I was not sure what career I wanted to pursue.

I have had a lot of enjoyable experiences using biology I studied in college to carve out a very rewarding science career. I want to use my knowledge and experiences to tutor students in biology which can be a complicated subject. Since I also started a second career as a reading tutor and mentor at the elementary school level, I can also provide tutoring in reading subjects involving early phonics skills (such as letter names, letter sounds, creating words by blending letter names and sounds), longer and more complicated words that students need to know starting in 4th grade, and learning to remember and recall what you read in longer and more complicated stories. It is a known fact that developing your read

I am a qualified WYZANT tutor in the economics subject area. I have a practical knowledge and education in economics as a result of my Bachelor's degree in Economics, Masters degree in Fish/Natural Resource economics, and a diversified professional career. I worked as a Resource Economics for the private sector following receiving my MS degree and then entered the Federal sector where I worked as an Industry Economist for a Fish Management agency for 10 years. I followed this early career applied economics work experience by expanding my career into the area of fish management biology due to my inter-disciplinary educational background. I have published and written several fishery status economics reports for a fish agency and also authored an article about my natural resource economics work experience on a West German fishing boat in Alaska. With my diverse economics background, I am able to view micro and macro economics problems and issues from a pragmatic and practical perspective.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in an elementary school (in Oregon) as an educational support staff for 1.5 years, on a school district team to test students phonics and literacy skills, and worked to critique high school level English research papers required in order for students to successfully graduate. I specifically taught rigorous reading intervention curricula in phonics, multi-syllabic drills, and comprehension to groups of students (K-4 grade levels) who scored below grade level tests in their reading skills. I also worked in classrooms to assist with reading and math subjects. I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees at higher institutions which allowed me to work successfully with all grade level students in K-6 grades and also at the High School Grade Level at a school district in Southern Oregon.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have worked as an Educational Support staff in Elementary Schools as a reading interventionist and assisted teachers with delivering math exercises. I am patient and kind and teach in way that gives students positive feedback and to develop their confidence. I have advanced education (degrees) so can help with early math curriculums as needed and specified by parents.
Elementary Science,

Elementary Science

I am a retired professional in the environmental sciences and am offering my tutoring services in biology and early math for students who have challenges. I am able to use my science knowledge to help students tackle a subject area that is often complex for early learners. I make early science and math learning fun and enjoyable so students can overcome their fear of a subject area that can often be intimidating. I also can help students with their early reading skills since I am also a WYZANT qualified tutor in this subject area as well.
Phonics,

Phonics

Following a 30 plus year career in environmental sciences, I started a "second" career by working as an early reading intervention specialist in an Elementary School in southern Oregon. I taught curriculums to small groups of students who were deficient in their reading skills. These curriculums involved Early Reading Intervention, Phonics for Reading, and REWARDS involving multi-syllabic reading training. In phonics reading, I taught word names, word sounds, blending sounds into complete words, word/picture associations, and sentence structure.
Reading

Reading

I have worked as an education specialist in an Elementary School delivering rigorous curriculums to groups of students in (1) Phonics for Reading to develop skills in word sounds, blending sounds into words, developing skills in Consonant-Verb-Consonant construction, and improving dramatically their reading fluency, and (2) a Program to help more advanced elementary readers who need more practice in multi-syllabic word construction and reading comprehension which is required to be successful entering middle school. I believe these curriculums which I use for tutoring students in reading produces results which improves the students confidence and enjoyment.

Thankful!

Encouraging and insightful. The boys really appreciated you and your style. It isn't easy to simultaneously evaluate a student and tutor but you are accomplishing those objectives. Highly recommended.
