I provide briefings, both formal and informal, on a daily basis within the scope of my job. These briefings have included classes and informational presentations for a crowded auditorium, to private presentations of analytic assessments to senior military and government policy makers. More important to just providing the briefings, I prepare and mentor coworkers on how to perform these same types of public speaking actions based on different types of audience and topic of discussion.

Study Skills

My 15+ years as a Department of Defense Intelligence analyst and instructor/trainer requires me to constantly study in order to be knowledgeable and up-to-date on perishable, dynamic topics of information. Specific to tutoring/teaching, I provide study tactics and strategies to my students to ensure that they are successful not only in completion of their course, but also in the real-world application of their newfound knowledge and skills. While I personally use specific study strategies dependent on the topic of study and the reason for studying, developing and improving study skills is an individual process. Along with an assessment of the student’s knowledge and skills, I assess each student’s current study habits and tutoring objectives. Once a baseline is established, I work with the student to develop and implement a study strategy that is uniquely compatible with each individual student. These study habits potentially include actions taken prior to class, during class, and at home (or other designated study area). The potential study habits include, but are not limited to, identification of what needs to be studied, and in what order (how to prioritize); small, daily organizational/preparation tips; identification of best time and place to study (environmental controls); how to study with a partner; when to study and for how long. Depending on the circumstances, this list can go on indifferently.

Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I competed on my high school wrestling team and then high school Judo team (I was a mediocre wrestler, but a pretty good Judo player). Later on, during active duty military service, I was instructed in all the standard combative techniques (LINE, then Army Combatives, Modern Army Combatives (MAC), and Marine Corps Martial Art (MCMAP)). This provided for a full curriculum in vertical and horizontal fighting arts, and included baton, knife and bayonette. Over the course of my military career I also dabbled with other martial arts (BJJ, Non-Classical Gung Fu, Krav Maga) but never moved passed a solid understanding of their basic curricula. Eventually, my military unit sent me through Kelly McCann’s Crucible Combatives/CQB program (with maintenance training for a couple years after initial learning), which is heavily based on WWII Combatives. This was my base-line art for many years. Concurrently, and most beneficial to my martial development, was my involvement as a core member and student/instructor in a self-defense study group located at my place work. Here I practiced, instructed and learned from multiple styles of martial arts. At this time I was mentored by an advanced student/instructor of Taichichuan/Chinese internal martial arts. I was also the primary combatives instructor for my unit – developing and managing Combatives instructing and skill integration for my unit (alongside the maintenance contract executed with MaCann’s group). Near the end of my service obligation (I served for over 8 years) I was instructed in Pekiti Tirsia Kali (PTK) military CQC. I then began to refine my experience, knowledge and skills into one personal martial art/system. I currently practice my art every day (at least a little), while at the same time continuing to explore other martial arts so that I can continue to grow in my own practice.

Structured, Motivating, and Knowledgeable

My first meeting with Joshua went very well! He is organized and extremely helpful in planning steps to further my education. From the short amount of time I spent with him, he seems to be very well-rounded in all subjects. I look forward to continue working with Josh in the future.
