I'm Shannon, and I hold a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of Kansas, where I graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The University of Kansas is renowned for its top-ranked Special Education program, consistently competing for the top spot with Vanderbilt University. As a special education advocate, I frequently encounter cases where students struggle to learn to read because schools fail to provide the evidence-based instruction they need to succeed. Many of these students have been identified with dyslexia, while others have not. Regardless, they all lack the necessary instructional support to become proficient readers.

It's essential for teachers to receive proper training to help all students learn to read effectively. Structured literacy instruction, based on science that's over 50 years old, is the proven approach. I am currently undergoing the Orton Gillingham Practicum for the associate level, working under a Fellow until I am certified. This means I am qualified to work with students at the special education level. Orton Gillingham instruction is prescriptive and diagnostic, focusing on individual student needs. It utilizes a multisensory and cumulative approach, with structured lessons that progressively build upon each other.

Is this approach right for your child? Absolutely. It is effective for all students. By unlocking the connection between phonemes (letter sounds) and graphemes (letters or letter sequences), we can pave the way for your child's reading success. As their dedicated tutor, I specialize in implementing the highly effective Orton Gillingham approach, tailored to your child's unique needs. Together, we will navigate the realms of sound and letter, transforming reading and spelling into an exciting journey of discovery. Give your child the gift of confidence and proficiency in literacy – let's embark on this rewarding learning journey together.
