Bio

I'm a mother of seven grown children, ages 17 to 35. I want every child to succeed in gaining the tools of learning. I have home taught all of my children for a portion of their school years so that they each successfully transitioned to public school with academic success. I have 19 years of experience teaching my own children pre-school through 6th grade. I enjoy working one-on-one. I believe I can augment your child's instruction to help them succeed in mastering basic language and math...

I believe I can augment your child's instruction to help them succeed in mastering basic language and math skills to give them a strong academic start.

I have enjoyed the privilege of tutoring home-schooling parents, showing them a simple, effective and inexpensive way to teach reading, spelling, handwriting and sentence writing.

I use a multi-sensory, phonics-based approach for students beginning to learn to read, write and spell. Students can start from scratch and become proficient readers, spellers and writers using this brain-friendly method.

Do you need more advanced writing skills help? I will walk students through practice writing assignments or their own writing, implementing proofreading skills to help them identify trouble spots. Students will learn to edit for spelling, punctuation, grammar, paragraph content, transitions and overall flow of thought, improved vocabulary and other elements of good writing. After practice, students will demonstrate more advanced writing skills!

Practical Elementary Math Skills: I can help elementary students better understand basic math concepts, demonstrating concepts with visuals and tactile manipulatives. Students will be guided in working basic mathematical problems, and drill on basic math facts to become proficient in practical math applications.

I have an Associate of Arts degree from Glendale Community College. I received an A in Beginning Intensive Phonics Application from Seattle Pacific University.

Grammar,

Grammar

I home taught my own children and enjoyed using EASY GRAMMAR lessons. The student is first taught the 51 prepositions and then practices finding prepositional phrases in sentences. The student then learns to locate the other parts of speech in sentences using practice sheets to build skill & enhance understanding of grammar.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Let me show you how to turn your rough draft into finished copy. I'd like to help you learn to proofread your written work, point by point, for spelling, grammar, punctuation, proper verb tense, subject-verb agreement and appropriate word choice. I can help you proofread one assignment or multiple assignments to make your editing worthwhile. Good proofreading is essential for excellence in writing.

Phonics,

Phonics

Using a modified, proven approach from The Writing Road to Reading, by Romalda Spalding, students can learn the phonetic building blocks for reading and spelling. This multi-sensory technique uses many brain pathways to help correlate and cement the components of English words. Students will simultaneously build reading, spelling, handwriting, grammar and punctuation skills with small incremental time investments. As soon as students begin to read and spell simple words, they will practice writing simple sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization and grammar. Seeing, hearing and "feeling" words, correctly, is a powerful tool! My recommended minimum age of student is 6 yrs. old. I have completed coursework, with an A, in Beginning Intensive Phonics Application through Seattle Pacific University. I have used this phonics method thoroughly with six of my own children from K-5th grades, giving them strong language arts skills. This method can help students attain the pieces to the puzzle of reading and spelling.
