Hi!

Math is all around us, and I believe that we all need to know how to use it in our daily lives. Unfortunately, math can be mysterious and difficult to understand at times. Sometimes a little extra explanation, or some additional guided practice, is needed to grasp a new concept, and that is where I can help. Because I feel so strongly about the importance of math skills, I am passionate about helping students overcome their math challenges and I would love to help you too.

I was fortunate that math made sense to me from an early age. After doing well in high school, I went on to study computer science at U.C. San Diego, and ultimately graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering with an overall 3.54 GPA. I also completed graduate level work in Structural Engineering at U.C. Berkeley. My coursework included math courses through calculus, as well as linear algebra and differential equations, earning mostly A's in those courses. My academic record garnered me admission to the Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor societies, as well as the Golden Key National Honor Society.

While I am currently new to Wyzant, I am not new to tutoring. My first tutoring experience occurred while I was in 8th grade when a fellow student asked if I could tutor their younger sibling. I tutored off-and-on during the ensuing years, particularly while attending college where I worked as a teaching assistant in computer labs at UCSD, or worked with fellow engineering students at SDSU. I have been tutoring online for the past six-plus years and have helped thousands of students (or their parents) to understand topics ranging from elementary school math through calculus, as well as in statistics, physics, computer science, and finance.

My experience in tutoring has taught me a couple of important points. The first is that every student has their own approach to learning. Some students may only need a better explanation, while others may need guided practice to truly master a

Proofreading,

Proofreading

I was an A student in English from middle school through college, and am fortunate to possess excellent writing skills. Extensive reading and writing has given me a well-tuned ear which helps me catch words and phrases which do not sound correct, either due to slight differences in meaning, mismatched tenses, or other pitfalls which may cause a reader to pause or lose track of the main idea. Rather than being overly strict about grammar rules, I understand that there are often creative reasons for breaking the rules that were taught to us as students. My approach is to work with an author to help craft the best possible composition, without treading upon their creativity, rather than simply dictating rules which must be followed.
Statistics

Statistics

I earned A's in statistics courses in college, and I have been tutoring students in statistics online for the past seven years. I have helped thousands of students with their statistics coursework, and am quite proficient at explaining the material in a manner which cuts through the jargon and technical language.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I excelled in math throughout elementary school, and on through my engineering degree, as it was and is a favorite subject of mine. I am particularly concerned with the teaching of elementary mathematics, as it lays the foundation for all future math learning. I understand that the concepts can be confusing at first, and I am a patient teacher with all ages of students. My belief is that repeated practice is crucial to developing skills at this level of mathematics. My goals are working toward accuracy first, and then working to improve speed.

Very informative, knowledgeable, and helpful!!

Statistics • Review of computations for arithmetic mean, standard deviation, and variance of a sample • Computation of quadratic mean and harmonic mean of a data set • Computation of the sample proportion • Use of the normal distribution to compute a confidence interval for a sample mean • Compuation of the margin of error for a sample mean • Use of the Student's t-distribution to compute a confidence interval for a sample mean • Computation of the number of degrees of freedom when using the t-statistic or the Chi-squared distribution • Determination of critical values when using the normal distribution, t-distribution, or Chi-squared distribution to compute confidence intervals • Use of tables for the normal, Student t, and Chi-square distributions • Probability computations using classical probability theory, i.e. number of successful outcomes divided by the number of possible outcomes • Probability of consecutive independent events (product of individual probabilities) • Binomial experiment criteria, and computation of binomial probability • Approximating the binomial distribution using the normal distribution
