Hello! I am Shriram, a current Honors College student at Stony Brook University double majoring in Biology and Spanish. I am a high achieving student with multiple accolades including being a Commended Student for the National Merit Scholarship in 2022, scoring a 1520 on my SAT, and being an AP scholar with Distinction with a score of 5 on AP Biology, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science A, and a score of 4 on AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Physics C Mechanics, and AP Spanish. Through my AP Spanish teacher, I became a tutor. I remember not being confident at first as Spanish was not my native language, it was a language I learned through my education. Regardless, I accepted the challenge and do not regret it one bit; the lessons I learned from teaching have become a part of my identity today. I developed various teaching methods, constructed different, engaging lesson plans, and most importantly adapted to my students need; this was the biggest lesson I took from teaching: flexibility.
Tutoring Spanish inspired me to continue to learn Spanish through college and expand my expertise into different subjects. I have been a chemistry laboratory teaching assistant and am currently an organic chemistry teaching assistant here at Stony Brook. When I host office hours, I make sure to understand the students' thinking; by understanding their explanations, I can help them understand the content even better. I do not hesitate to stay a little bit longer and answer questions as my teaching assistants and professors did the same for me. I get to see the smile on their faces which brings me satisfaction. Seeing that I can help in subjects other than Spanish has inspired me to keep pursuing this passion in other STEM subjects.
I hope to help students in these STEM subjects. With various resources at my fingertips, I can ensure that the students I work with will expand their knowledge of the subject while learning with passion.
