Hi, my name is Irina!

If you need to study German or Russian to help with your career growth, to study/work abroad, for language tests, or just for your personal satisfaction….then it would be my pleasure to embark on that journey with you. For me, each new student’s enthusiasm is a source of inspiration that propels me to new heights.

I am a native Russian speaker, and graduated from Pyatigorsk Linguistics University, one of Russia’s top-notch linguistics universities and research centers. My specialty is teaching German and English as a second language, and I also received a second M.A. in teaching Russia as a foreign language from the Pushkin Russian Language Institute in Moscow.

Over my more than 20 years in teaching, I have trained people of all stripes for all kinds of career and personal goals: for communication with foreign partners, to improve their grades at school, or to pass university entrance exams. I work as a language instructor at a Washington language institute, where I gained a lot of experience teaching Russian, German, and cross-cultural awareness to U.S. government employees.

While teaching, I rely on not only my extensive experience, but also try to keep up to date with the latest textbooks, methodologies, multi-media programs, and other tools for teaching foreign languages.
My teaching approach is comprehensive, and includes all the components of language: phonetics (working on correct pronunciation), grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading, and speaking fluently. However, regardless of a student’s age, I also make every effort to organize lessons in different formats so that they are not monotonous.

I would be happy to hear from you!

I am a professional teacher of German, having received an M.A. in teaching German as a foreign language at one of Russia’s top-notch linguistics universities and research centers. I love helping people become immersed in the German language and gain an understanding of it since it is the key to a magnificent culture and, to a large degree, to Central Europe as a whole. As an individual tutor, I taught high school students who were getting ready to take their entrance examinations for admittance into the linguistics departments at Russia’s leading universities. Many of my students now have successful careers as professors, translators, journalists, and managers in multinational corporations. Last year two of my students passed their DaF tests (German as a foreign language test for admittance to German universities) and were admitted to the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In a Russian pedagogical university, I taught German to freshmen, sophomores, and third-year students for 10 years. Besides teaching, I developed teaching methodologies for classes designed to improve students’ spoken and written German. I was chosen to be in an international delegation for an educational exchange to Germany with the goal of subsequently implementing international educational standards. Besides all this, for 9 years I worked as a translator in Moscow in the office of a major German equipment manufacturer, and have hands-on, real-world experience participating in the everyday life of a German corporation – along with participating in international conferences in Dusseldorf, Cologne, and Munich. I prefer using textbooks and multi-media materials published by the leading German publishing houses Hueber Verlag, Klett Verlag, and Schubert Verlag, that have been endorsed by the Goethe Institute and Fridrich-Schiller University, Deutsche Welle materials, and also those which I developed.

I am a native-born Russian who has an M.A. in linguistics and over 12 years' worth of overall professional teaching experience. Being very familiar with the teaching methods used to teach Russian as a foreign language, I employ a wide range of techniques to make a complicated language both understandable and fun to learn. My experience includes teaching Russian in a multinational French construction company as well as teaching Russian in the foreign languages department at a pedagogical university in Russia. Here in America, I have been teaching Russian to many government workers, from total beginners up to advanced speakers, as well as preparing them to take Russian proficiency tests for various goals.

Structured and Immersive

Irina provides me with the most immersive learning environment possible without traveling to a Russian speaking country. This is exactly what I need and want from a teacher. She will take time to get to know you and what your goals are to build a plan specifically for you. I've attended a language school in the area on two different occasions and had several tutors. Irina is by far the best. I look forward to every lesson.

Learning was very informative! We went over how future lessons will look as well as some basics of Russian that I missed, which has helped me a lot!

Professional, patient, and encouraging tutor

Irina does a great job of drawing the language from the student. She carefully assessed my level, used sentences that had words I didn’t always know, but fell into a context which I could understand, leading to the improvement of my vocabulary and sentence structure of Russian. Irina does a great job of making me feel part of the conversation while continually improving my ability. Simply amazing!

Irina pinpointed strengths and weaknesses right away.

Very productive tutoring session! Great patience and rapport. Irina has a good plan when working with students and recognized my son’s deficiencies in speaking and writing. He feels good that he will make strides.

Simply the best!

Irina listened to what I wanted to get out of my lessons, found fun and dynamic resources to help me with my learning, and even assigned homework so that I could practice between lessons! She is so experienced and really takes the time to explain things thoroughly! I highly recommend her to anyone looking to get thorough and knowledgeable lessons!
