Hi, my name is Cary and I’ve taught math for over thirty years, mostly at Hood River Valley High School. I taught most levels of math there: Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Advanced Algebra with Trigonometry, and PreCalculus. Hi, my name is Cary and I’ve taught math for over thirty years, mostly at Hood River Valley High School. I taught most levels of math there: Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Advanced Algebra with Trigonometry, and PreCalculus. What I have learned is that the most important variable determining whether a student can learn from a teacher is the level of trust in the relationship. Teachers who show they care about their students gain their student’s trust and that leads to a shared effort in pursuit of student growth. That’s why I start by taking some time to get to know my students and what is important to them.

Students who are seeking help in math need a variety of perspectives. It is not helpful for a tutor to continue to say the same things, only louder and slower. Students may need to be shown different perspectives to help them understand a concept. That’s why I constantly monitor my student’s responses to check their understanding and find out which notions are helping them make sense of the math.

I want to build my student’s math confidence. I’ll do that by introducing concepts using a “low floor” to promote early success but inching up the challenge to find the right balance so my students will feel accomplished. Everyone is a math person and it’s my goal to help my students believe in themselves and close our sessions on a high note.

It takes a village to raise a math student, so I am on board with you, your parents, your teacher and anyone else who matters to you. I will be responsive to your questions as soon as possible. I look forward to meeting and working with you. Book a session today.

Really patient and understanding. Also really good at explaining in simple terms.

My daughter was very happy with her tutoring session with Cary. She was more confident with her understanding of two column proofs and geometric rules. We plan on using Cary.

Really patient and understanding. Also really good at explaining in simple terms.

He was really patient and explained ideas in simple terms so I would truly understand the material. Even during practice problems he was great at walking through the problem and explaining the errors I would make and tricks on how to fix them. Overall, he was a great tutor and very helpful with explanations. I plan on using his tutoring services again for future help.
