Even though I teach Science at the college level, I always enjoy one on one interactions with high school or college level students, where I can help that person achieve the goals and successes they desire. Most people just lack the confidence, and I so enjoy watching them gain confidence and achieve what they want to.

I have a broad education with a degree in Chemistry, minor in Math, and a PhD in Biology, so I think this can help me integrate subjects for the student to both engage their interest and find a starting point of strength for them. Students generally comment they find my explanations very clear, with many real life examples, that really helps them to understand the important concepts. I actually work hard at this, to make sure to explain the subject several different ways so that the student can grasp the material well.

One of my main objectives as well is to increase the "academic muscle" of any student I help, so that they are more confident in their own abilities as they move forward, and can make real progress toward their goals.

Study Skills

I teach open access college freshman, no entrance requirements. I see students come in ill prepared to do college work, and have worked very hard to help them acquire the skills that will help them succeed in any career path they choose, so I have some idea of where they need to be as college freshman. I regularly transform freshman A&P students into nursing students (one of whom just informed me she is making an A in nursing school!) The secret ingredients are old-fashioned reading and essay writing skills, especially for this generation of student. They must train to increase their working memory, to begin to understand mastery of subject (rather than factoid memorization). I feel I could adapt my methods very easily to any age group by using the appropriate level study materials. Who better to prepare students for college, than a teacher who sees what is lacking in students and has demonstrated successes in helping them build study skills that will allow them to be successful in any career path?

Kathleen is an outstanding tutor

Kathleen is an outstanding tutor. I am a medical student, and I was struggling with Physiology and Biochemistry as medical school is very fast paced and there is a lot of material to cover in such little time. I am glad that I reached out to her through Wyzant because she has extensive knowledge in both subjects. She explains each lecture in a thorough, concise, and clear way. She also emphasizes the most important details that I would need to know as a physician. My professors did provide practice questions to prepare for the upcoming exams and because its medical school, most of the exam questions are in the form of clinical vignettes. Whenever, I was confused on why the correct answer was the correct one, she would explain thoroughly why the answer was the best answer and what key details to look for in the clinical vignettes that would help me arrive to the correct answer. As I took the exam, I approached each question in the same manner, and this resulted in my exam grades increasing greatly. I am very pleased with her tutoring as I was originally doing very poorly in these subjects. I was happy with my final grades thanks to the outstanding job Kathleen did by tutoring me. My only wish is that I had hired her at the start of med school. I feel more confident in myself and I can explain the material that we went over very well to others. Anyone learning these subjects will extremely benefit from her tutoring. She is not only an amazing tutor but a very lovely person.

Very helpful and knowledgable

I was really struggling with a lot of the concepts of biochem. I came to Kathleen for help and she was amazing. She was super helpful and patient and explained anything I didn't understand by using examples that I do already understand. If need be, I will absolutely ask Kathleen to tutor me again.

knowledgeable and dedicated

Kathleen helped fill the gaps in my understanding of genetics. With her help, I was able to master and gain confidence in the genetics concepts and properly prepare for my Genetics test (I was able to get an A+!). Thank you, Kathleen!

Excellent experience, amazing tutor!

Ms. Kathleen is a great tutor! I turned to her for help when I found myself struggling to understand a summer biology course this past July. I was fearful of failing the class and ultimately ended up passing with an excellent grade. Ms. Kathleen was patient, kind, understanding, and explained abstract concepts in a clear manner. She made learning biology a much more pleasant experience! Thank you so much for all :) -Alexa

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I’m an undergraduate student currently taking a summer biology course that covers two semester’s worth of information in two months. With a large amount of information being covered in such a short period of time, Kathy really knows how to break it down and explain it in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming. If I don’t understand a concept at first, Kathy is happy to re-explain it in a different way that may make more sense for me to comprehend. She has extensive knowledge on a broad range of topics and is a big contribution to my A- in the first semester portion of the course.

Helpful, intelligent, and patient.

Determining the charges on amino acids at different pH. Titration curve explanations of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, arginine, histidine, lysine, cysteine, and tyrosine.

Very knowledgeable

Biochemistry deals with tons of information, but Kathleen knows the field well enough to help you reduce that information so that you can understand it rather than memorize it. This course was manageable enough that I ended with an A in the course.
