ADULT - French for travelers, including passive vocabulary (what you might need to understand someone) and active vocabulary (what you might need to say). We can discuss cultural aspects that the traveler might encounter, as well as ideas on how to get around and sites to see.

ADULT - French more in depth for those who want to take on a serious longer term series of lessons in French. We would use a text which offers a coherent structure in the lessons as well as an organized sequence to the material. This does not preclude the student using web sites in between lessons and my bringing in other resources to complement the lesson. I like to speak as much French as possible in the lessons, but this depends on the comfort level of the student.

HIGH SCHOOL - For high school students whose school does not offer French but who want to learn French outside of school. Suggested minimum meeting: 2 times/week for retention and practice.

I have taught for 43 years in various high schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Massachusetts. My B.A. degree is in French and German. I lived in France for a year in the mid-seventies where I not only gained fluency but also confidence in the language. Since then, I have done summer classes in Tours, Rennes and Toulouse (France)and Quebec City and been the recipient of two NEH grants (Montreal/Quebec and Dakar, Senegal). I have been involved with school to school exchange programs with Marseille, France (six exchanges) and Abidjan, Ivory Coast (three exchanges).
In addition, I have organized and lead a number of two week spring trips to France where the students spent 6 out of the 13 days with a French family.

My greatest asset is my ability to adapt my teaching to where the student is at. I can bring in different techniques depending on the needs or level of the student. I believe in teaching incrementally, always just one step beyond where the student is at and bringing him or her one step further in skill building.

great tutor!

Paul helped me with conversational practice and a few structures that I needed to learn. It was a great session. He is very patient and kind. I am looking forward to our next session.

Paul is the best!

I have been meeting with Paul weekly for nearly 2 years now. He is so helpful and patient. He meets his students at their skill level and plans appropriate lessons to help them progress in their French. As an IB student he has also helped me prepare for exams and I always go into them feeling confident and prepared. I hope to continue taking lessons with Paul throughout college. Whether you are a student like me who wants some additional 1:1 practice, or an adult who wants to learn French for the first time, Paul is the tutor for you! Thanks, Paul!

Off to a great start.

Paul was great and got focused right away on what we need to know for our upcoming travel to France. He brought us some great handouts which are super helpful.

Excellent, patient, and accommodating tutor

I have just finished my ninth (and probably final) session with Paul, as I am about to leave for a French-speaking region of Switzerland. He was terrific at tailoring the sessions to my particular needs and was very accommodating in other ways as well. He is extremely pleasant, patient, and skillful, and I recommend him highly.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

As an experienced educator, Paul knows how to reach a student and teach to their level. He had several workbook options, and found the ones tailored to me. I'm very pleased to have found Paul through Wyzant!

Great French tutor

Paul tutored me in preparation for a combined business/pleasure trip to Paris. My only previous experience was taking French in college decades ago, but after meeting with Paul weekly for a couple of months, I was well prepared and confident interacting in basic French in restaurants, shops, taxis, asking for and understanding directions, etc. Paul was very patient, and during our lessons quickly adapted to my level and needs with lessons that were practical but methodical, including working from a textbook and other materials that he provided. He also provided cultural and practical tips that came in very handy during my trip! He was also able to work around my daytime work schedule, which was great. I highly recommend Paul for someone who wants to brush up on his or her French, or prepare for a trip to a French speaking country.

Patient & Understanding!

Paul has a lot of understanding & much needed patience with his new students, who have never been instructed with a foreign language. He does a review every time we meet and teaches at a rate that is at beginners level. He makes us interact which helps in grasping the lesson. Chris & I are both enjoying the experience and Paul makes it interesting to learn.

Amazing Tutor

Paul is an outstanding tutor. Not only has he worked around my work schedule, he has also personalized our French experience to the best of my ability. We are hardly four weeks in and I have already learned more than I did in a semester at college. While we use a French-made textbook, Paul also provides complementary worksheets that enhance each lesson. Paul continues to challenge my ability to learn, memorize and pronounce everyday phrases, common nouns, and those tough French words. Highly recommended.
