I graduated Summa Cum Laude in both Math Education and English Creative Writing from California State University of Long Beach. I enjoy finding creative ways to help people understand math (and don’t mind helping proofread English papers either). I became interested in teaching because I enjoyed tutoring students while I was in college. Now, after eight years of teaching high school math in a private school (primarily Geometry, Algebra 2, and Trigonometry), I have retired in order to have a more flexible schedule to spend time with my new baby!

I still love helping students learn and gain confidence in math, even if they have struggled with it in the past. My favorite part of being a teacher was working one-on-one with my students and seeing them reach the “a-ha moment” and realizing that they can do it. I would love to work with you and help you understand math (or English) as well!

I have a bachelors in Math Education, am certified as a math teacher, and taught math for 8 years in a high school.

I have a bachelors in English Creative Writing, and love to read!

I am available to tutor you online and would love the opportunity to help you understand anything you are struggling with - in math or English!

Proofreading

Out of my love for reading and writing, I majored in English Creative Writing at California State University in Long Beach. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the English program, with a 4.0 GPA. Although I have only taught math as a career, I have helped my math students with their English homework at times. I also help proofread papers for my friends and family.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

As a Math Education major in college, I have used the skills learned in Algebra 1 as a foundational part of all the later mathematics I learned. I have also reviewed and helped students with Algebra 1 skills and concepts while they were taking the Geometry and Algebra 2 courses I taught for 8 years. The concepts in Algebra 1 are used and expanded in all the courses I have taught.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught mathematics at a private high school for eight years. Of those years, I spent seven teaching classes Algebra 2, Algebra 2/Trig, and Honors Algebra 2/Trig. So I have experience helping students with different math backgrounds learn different levels of Algebra 2.
Geometry

Geometry

I have taught math at a private high school for 8 years. Of those years, most have been spent teaching varying levels of Geometry. I have taught both Geometry and Honors Geometry, and have helped students in my class who love math and those that struggle with math. I am comfortable with proofs, and can explain them as a logical process like connecting puzzle pieces.

Trigonometry

I have taught mathematics at a private high school for 8 years. During that time, I have taught Algebra 2/Trig and/or Honors Algebra 2/Trig most years. I have taught the unit circle many times, and like to help students see where all the coordinates on the circle come from, so they can figure it out even if they are struggling to memorize each coordinate.

Very effective

We hired Maria just a few weeks before my sophomore’s math final. He was doing poorly in the class, despite his hard work. In the short time she worked with him, Maria helped him to turn his grade around dramatically.

Great teacher

She helped my daughter with her high school level math and my daughter walked away more confident and happy to do homework! Thank you so much!

Great tutor. Very patient.

Maria has been working with my teen son for several weeks now. To say he is not always the easiest is an understatement but he has truly found it easy to work with her. He tutors with her 2x a week and we could not be more grateful for her help. She is very patient and accommodating and very easy to work with.
