If you're looking for a mathematician as a math tutor, I'm your guy. Although I have tutored most branches of mathematics, my focus is now Calculus and Pre-Calculus, both at the high school and college level. There is significant student demand for a qualified calculus tutor, especially with respect to online courses.

I come equipped with a BS in Mathematics from Marshall University (cum laude). I have taught high school mathematics to grades 9 through 12. I taught college prep mathematics to advanced high school seniors, and after college I even tutored some of my former high school math teachers working on advanced degrees.

I spent most of my career as a multi-credentialed Enrolled actuary (FSA, FCA, MAAA) and president of an actuarial firm. From time to time I assisted students who were studying for actuarial exams. I took an early retirement in 2011, but still wanted to stay active in the area that I love best... mathematics. Mathematics is my native language. Additionally, I teach chess and can help chemistry and physics students with the underlying mathematics that is so utterly prevalent in those subjects.

Related Hobbies and Interests:

I have been a Cub Scout Den Leader, Coach for Carmel Dads Club Basketball, Baseball, Football and Soccer programs, and when my wife and twin boys aren't keeping me busy, I love to read books on American and World History.

Travel:

Finally, because of the number of students that I have, I do not have time to travel. Tutoring is done either in my home or via Zoom.

Calculus,

Calculus

Put at its simplest, Calculus deals with rate of change and area under a curve. In particular, differential calculus addresses rate of change in the determination of critical points of functions, maximum and minimum points, inflection points, related rate problems, optimization problems, slopes of functions at specific points and many, many other things. Integral Calculus focuses on issues relating to area under a curve. In a sense it is differential Calculus going backwards. Determining area, volume, cost/revenue/profit, and many other things utilize this form of Calculus. If you need someone to help you sort all of this out, I'm your guy. I work to simplify Calculus concepts for my students by utilizing practical examples and problems and have had great success.
Precalculus

Precalculus

In order to reach the mysterious lands of Calculus you must first pass through the valley of Precalculus, and it's not an easy trip! But Precalculus forms the building blocks of Calculus and your success in Calculus will be directly related to the strength of your Precalculus building blocks. Precalculus is a difficult subject mainly because it is an extremely broad math subject. You will learn about all kinds of functions, one-to-one functions, even functions, odd functions, power functions, logarithmic functions, exponential functions and many more. You will have to learn how to translate, reflect and dilate these functions. You will have to learn how to graph all of these functions. You will have to learn how to find the roots of these functions. And then there is the trigonometry part of Precalculus. What is meant by radians, angular motion, sin/cos/tangent, amplitude and phase shift, trig identities, graphing trig functions, the list goes on and on. There is much more material in Precalculus than I've described here but you get the idea and you can get through it with a good grade. If you need someone to help you through this maze of topics, I'm your guy. I will simplify the concepts with examples and problems which will help you understand them and succeed in your class work.

Exceptional Knowledge

Joe has a style that works great - and with his teaching background he has been able to not only fill in the gaps for my son, but also help prepare him for what he’s going to hear in the next lesson.

Great help, smart, easy to work with

Joe was very helpful with my son for college calculus! He was always available and pushed my son in a good way! My son could always reach out with a question and he helped him tremendously.

Fantastic and relatable.

Needed a quick refresher to get caught up with the curriculum. Joe was able to do that in exceptional fashion and explained concepts in a very concise manner.

Amazing Tutor

Joe is a very patient tutor that helps clarify lessons a TON. He explains things differently which helps to make the lessons easier as well as homework problems. I retook Calc 1 and used Joe to help me with lessons and Iv'e already noticed a difference in my grades!

Good teacher

My son was able to go from a D in PreCalc to a 96% in his final exam. I wish we'd found Joe sooner because that 96% helped his grade up to only a C. I'm now having Joe tutor my son in AB Calculus to get a jump start on what my son is taking next year. I recommend him.

Great Tutor!

Joe has worked with both of our daughters and he did a great job! Both girls were able to accomplish their goals after working with Joe.

Great session

My son came home from his first session with Joe and felt that his time was well spent and that the session was productive. He is not giving me a hard time about future sessions and in fact, sees the benefit and thinks that they will be helpful.

What A Wonderful AP Calculus Tutor

Joe is a wonderful tutor who happily goes the extra mile to help his students. At the beginning of the year, my daughter was having trouble understanding her AP Calculus class. Within a month of tutoring, she had brought her C/D up to a B, and by the end of the year she received an A as her final grade and a 5 on the AP Calculus test. There were several times when Joe changed his schedule, so that he could help her study for a test the next day. You would be hard pressed to find a more dedicated tutor than Joe.

Great Tutor for Advanced Math Course

Joe has been an excellent tutor for my son for AP Calculus. He was patient and helped my son get through the course even though there were some initial hiccups with him being transferred from another school. Joe was flexible and tried his best always to accommodate to our schedule. I will recommend him without any reservation to anybody looking for an advanced level math tutor.

Excellent experience.

July 2013 update: My son has now completed a full semester of twice-weekly tutoring sessions with Joe. He achieved an A- on his final exam in honors pre-calculus. There is no question that the personal attention and high expectations, and good communication with me about my son's level of progress and commitment, made the difference. My son will be meeting with Joe over the summer to get ready for AP Calculus and with a tutor who truly cares about our child's progress, we are more than confident about the future. Thank you, Joe! January 2013: My son has had four sessions with Joe so far, and each time he has reported that his understanding of the material has improved. Joe conveys his enjoyment of the subject and my son feels that Joe enjoys working with him and really believes in him and wants him to be successful. Joe is encouraging. This positive relationship alleviates some of the anxiety that can come with working on a subject that presents challenges. As if all of that were not enough, Joe knows the stuff, cold, without hesitation, and can explain it in more than one way. When we are talking trigonometry, that's important!!
