I have been a private tutor for five years, during which time I have helped students improve their grades in and their understandings of various academic subjects with an emphasis on English- all for the long term. I have prepared students for the SAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT and ISEE drawing from my multidisciplinary background and broad teaching path of fifteen years that spans elementary – high school and college. During this time, I also worked as a gifted education specialist. As an educational consultant and advocate, I assisted K-12 teachers customize their practices to the individual needs and strengths of their students. For five years, I worked in educational publishing. This led to a series of educational resource books that I wrote to support teachers and provide them with strategies to improve student learning. The books were written to show what a difference it makes when instruction is active and student-centered. Research proves that each student learns in unique ways. I customize my approach and the strategies that I use according to the individual needs and talents of the student.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an M.S. degree in elementary education and am also certified in gifted education. My classroom experience ranges from grades 2-12. Most recently, as a consultant/itinerant teacher, it was one of my responsibilities to develop and implement or model lesson plans and units of study in a variety of subject areas, K-12. I collaborated with content area teachers in a five county region to differentiate instruction by integrating content standards, research-based instructional strategies and 21st century skills into their curricula. My strength as a teacher and a tutor comes from my ability to focus on the student's interests, needs and abilities.
Reading,

Reading

I wrote four reading and writing resource books to help teachers engage their students in active learning. The books addressed the instructional approaches in reading instruction that research supports. These strategies include direct teaching of decoding, comprehension and literature appreciation as well as phonetics. I've been trained to conduct Great Books discussions and Socratic Seminars. I'll help your child learn to devour books by tutoring him or her in an organized, systematic, efficient way.

"Cooperative Learning, Social Studies and Success" is one of the nineteen resource books I wrote for elementary teachers. In addition, social studies was a critical part of the curriculum that I taught in grades 2, 3, 5 and 6.

Test Preparation

Regents,

Regents

I have a long history teaching the NYS Regents Comprehensive Examination in English because I modeled differentiated lessons for English high school teachers in four different school districts as a consultant for WSWHE BOCES. I understand the rigors of the four parts of this exam. The skills and strategies of reading and writing for information and understanding, literary response and critical analysis are not all that different from the skills and strategies that students need to be successful on the SAT or ACT. I have been helping students prepare for the PSAT, SAT and SAT subject tests in critical reading and writing for four years.
