About Julie

Bio

I enjoy helping students in general chemistry, biochemistry, AP chemistry and any other school chemistry test preparation.

I hold a B.S. in chemistry and M.S. in biochemistry. Using molecular cloning, I have also conducted research in biochemistry and neuroscience laboratories at UC Riverside and San Diego State University. I have extensive teaching experience in college-level general chemistry, biochemistry and neuroscience from three different universities, as well as experience in...

I hold a B.S. in chemistry and M.S. in biochemistry. I have extensive teaching experience in college-level general chemistry, biochemistry and neuroscience from three different universities, as well as experience in tutoring individuals at both the high school and college levels. My goal is to help any student understand, summarize, and prepare for comprehensive chemistry exams in order to obtain a desired result in a relatively short amount of time.

AP chemistry should be as high-level as a general chemistry course in college. In order to guide students, I have notes and worksheets organized by topic on my website. My AP students solve practice questions from previous exams created by CollegeBoard on each topic. AP chemistry is usually an easier course to approach due to the plethora of information available online and the types of questions on the test administered by CollegeBoard. The SAT chemistry subject test is easier for some students because of the simple question types and shorter proctored test time. Although it often requires many months of organized preparation in order to obtain a score over 90%, I have had some very successful students achieve this in only six to ten weeks. Students lose interest in the subject primarily because of a poor understanding of stoichiometry. Once they understand the concepts of a mole and of molarity, most of them are comfortable with solving comprehensive questions in more advanced topics. In order to help students, I teach a fairly simple approach to Lewis dot structures, and utilize model kits to simulate molecular geometry. I also introduce a shortcut to hybridization that many students find to be helpful.

Excellent Chemistry Tutor

Julie is a superb AP Chemistry tutor with uncommon teaching techniques. While simplifying complex concepts, she separates the important from mundane, and inculcates in the students a quiet sense of confidence. This confidence allows the students to do exceptionally well in the classroom that in turn feeds their confidence on the AP exam. While being gentle, she also is a tough task master. I am not sure who suggested her as a tutor but I am in their debt. All in all, an exceptional find. Thank you, Julie.

Julie is instrumental in teaching and improving Dominick's understanding of AP chemistry concepts. She preplans her classes and regularly tests his understanding of the material. If you need to understand, not just survive advanced Chemistry classes look no further! I am an unconventional student who often misses classes due to extracurriculars. I started by being afraid of AP Chemistry and now I am doing very well in my college level Chem classes. Julie’s determined attitude changed my fear into proficiency and made me a top student. Her work did not resume to our hours. She taught me what my school did not, that in science it is necessary to truly understand all aspects, not just some recipes and common solving patterns. She gave me numerous extra and optional problems that helped me grasp the full depth of the notions, not just the most common and basic problems. Initially I wondered if it was really necessary. Mrs. O is definitely one of the best AP chemistry tutors in my opinion!

When I first began AP Chemistry, I was not well prepared for the challenges the new material presented me. My grades dropped drastically from my first few unit tests, but Mrs. O patiently helped me with concepts I found confusing. Very Knowledgeable, Organized and Energetic AP Chemistry tutor

One month and a half before the AP Chemistry exam I realized that my school will never finish in time the material for the paper exam of May. Prof. Julie O. came to the rescue. She made a plan and told me how many sessions do I need for a review. Her teaching was articulate and efficient so we finished fast the remaining course material and we started to review. While reviewing, she balanced speed with depth covering the whole material. We did lots of FRQs in detail and with each session I felt more confident. She also gave me homework and she corrected it on her free time. We never got billed for it. Prof. Julie O only asked if I understood her detailed corrections and if I had a problem she went over it once more. Advancing at the right pace, I finished just in time to go and take a 5! I am speedy and I rush making mistakes. Prof. Julie O. also taught in parallel my sister who is always taking her time to explain, so she needs to rush.
