I have a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where I researched statistical probability models of medical diagnosis. After that I worked for a small research and development company, leading projects focused on preventive health and automated cancer diagnosis. I've always felt comfortable with math and enjoy uncovering the ways that formulas and data interact. I especially appreciate statistics and biostatistics, which can give us a glimpse into how nature works under the hood and can advise us on the best steps to take to protect our health and improve our lives.

Before coming to Wyzant I taught in night school and have tutored statistics and math from algebra through calculus locally for several years. I'm not a big fan of rote, cookie-cutter, "same-for-everyone," approaches and see the challenge of tutoring as being flexible and patient enough to find the best analogy to explain to each student how and why particular formulas or equations work best for solving particular types of problems. When tutoring math and statistics, I hope that I can help others see the same underlying truth and beauty that I do. Thanks for reading.

Statistics

I took courses in both statistics and test and measurement theory as an undergrad at Brandeis University and continued with more statistics coursework as a grad student at the University of Pennsylvania. For my dissertation I researched statistical and probabilistic models of medical diagnosis. More recently I've been using biostatistics to help build mobile preventive health apps. I've tutored students in statistics courses using SPSS and StatCrunch and have expertise in the statistical programming language R. Earlier this year I helped a nurse manager who was returning to complete her Bachelor's in nursing get an A in her online Statistics class.

As an undergraduate at Brandeis University I took three semesters of calculus, plus other advanced math in the computer science department. I received an 800 on my SAT Math Level II, which tests knowledge of Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Trigonometry. I've tutored math locally, algebra through calculus, for several years alongside my wife, who has been tutoring for 16 years. I've also put together a collection of Algebra II study sheets to help explain concepts to students.

I recommend that Precalculus students check out the manga-inspired book "Who Is Fourier? A Mathematical Adventure" for a gentle introduction to trigonometry and trigonometric identities, complex numbers and powers of i, vectors, and exponential and logarithmic functions.

I studied statistics as an undergrad in Psychology at Brandeis University and as a grad student in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. My doctoral dissertation involved putting together a biostatistical model of medical diagnostic reasoning. I delved further into Biostatistics while working at a research and development company, where I led teams to build a health advisory expert system and automated software for cancer diagnosis. I've also applied Biostatistics to help me design mobile preventive health apps. Biostatistics and Epidemiology textbooks I've used for tutoring include Fundamentals of Biostatistics by Rosner, Essentials of Biostatistics in Public Health by Sullivan, Principles of Biostatistics by Gauvreau, The Practice of Statistics in the Life Sciences by Baldi, Basic Biostatistics by Gerstman, Intuitive Biostatistics by Motulsky, Gordis Epidemiology by Celentano, Epidemiology for Public Health Practice by Friis, and Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health by Aschengrau.

Exceptional Tutoring Sessions

Stan worked with me for my Biostatistics course for my MPH. It has been many years since I've had to tackle any sort of math. Stan was patient, kind, knowledgeable, and made sure that I left each session with a grasp on the material. He also provided helpful resources and tips for shortcuts and time savers. My grade was really suffering halfway through the course but, thanks to my sessions with Stan, my final grade was an A-. I highly recommend working with him. If I need support in the future, I'll definitely reconnect with him.

Stan creates a learning style that helps you absorb the material of statistics if you have trouble with probability and interpreting math problems as a whole.

Stan provided valuable resources to navigate critical values and t-scores without elongating or spending too much time on one problem. My issues with math are overthinking problems that might come off as intimidating initially, and to some who have had years and trouble understanding math, like myself, Stan ensured that problems are simple as long as the terms are understood and what values and formulas are applicable to what the question is asking. Mostly, by paying attention to if they're asking for a probability, risk, etc.. he also worked throughout the practice problems and it ensures active recall for success.

Stan really knows biostatistics

Worked in a variety of stats equations in helping with assignment and rubric clarification. Very patient and kind. Term ending soon.

Knowledgeable and patient

just be calm and slow down LOL. Walked me through the lesson and how to put it in statcrunch correctly to get the answer I needed. I would recommend to anyone to give stan a try I think they will be satisfied with the outcome. Thanks Stan

Failing Biostatistics?

Not anymore! Stan is awesome, he provides practice examples that help clarify all the little things we would normally get stuck on! Turning those F's into A's over here ! I couldn't ask for a better tutor !

Stan is a great tutor because he ensures that you leave each session confident in what you do know, but armed with the intention and plan to be better.

Stan taught me to be confident in my calculations. I love that Stan is patient and talks to you with the intention of imparting knowledge. Stan has helped me accomplish grasping concepts in biostatistics that I felt hopeless in learning.

Very Helpful Session

Stan was very informative and explained really well the ideas I was stuck on. He was very helpful with explaining what I needed to correct with my homework assignment and explained what I needed to fix on the spots I was stuck on.

Kind and Patient

Stan worked with me weekly for almost 2 months on relearning statistics and research methods for my upcoming licensure exam in psychology. He was incredibly helpful and patient in explaining terms I was unfamiliar with or confused by. He also shared additional resources to enhance my learning even more. He is a great tutor!
