My approach to tutoring is a very simple one: teach the basics in a way the student "relates" and understands. I do not believe in rote memorization. Chemistry and Math are disciplines that build from the basics. I do NOT do homework for students, but will assist them as they work through the assignments on their own.

Outside of the classroom, I am an avid sports fan enjoying golf, football, basketball, etc.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is probably the most critical subject in mathematics because it sets the stage for all other math courses. My approach is to make sure the student truly grasps the concepts involved, and does not just "memorize" the processes or procedures that are used to achieve the correct answers to problems.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

My approach to teaching algebra is similar to that used in teaching other subjects. I try to impart an understanding of the fundamentals, with logic and reasoning, and shy away from memorization, unless necessary.
Biology,

Biology

I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and have taught Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacology at the University level. I have done independent research in Biochemistry and Biology, and have a good knowledge of Biology and how it relates to the cell, and the organism.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

High school and college level general chemistry (inorganic), introductory chemistry, and analytical chemistry are some of the areas in which I can help. I approach tutoring Chemistry from a point of view where I explain concepts in an easy to understand manner, and supplement what the text book has to offer. I have had great success with all of the students I have assisted.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

My approach to pre-algebra is slightly different from what the text books cover. This gives the student a "second" way of working out the problems and an alternate way of trying to understand the basis of the various operations.

Nursing

Nursing

Nursing involves many disciplines, including math, chemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, anatomy, and many others. I try to integrate all of the life sciences and math into my approach in assisting nursing students so that they might gain a full and complete understanding of the concepts being studied. I have a background in Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Life Sciences, which makes me uniquely qualified to integrate all of these subjects into the field of Nursing.

Excellent tutor - professional - patient -fantastic

J.R. Has been regularly tutoring Chemistry to my daughter who is in her senior year. This is the first time we ever used a tutor and I was surprised how well this has helped my daughter. J. R. Has not only helped her with the approach but also has really built her confidence. He has helped her to better conceptually understand problems and topics along with the appropriate approach to solving them. If you have a child that could use a little help or a huge boost in chemistry then J.R. Is a tutor I highly recommend. I believe my daughter describes it best - J.R. Helps her to understand and retain information better than what she was experiencing in the classroom

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for your kind words. I must admit that your daughter makes my job very easy. She is a delight to work with, and is accepting of my input and eager to learn. I am sure she will do well in her college courses and beyond. Thank you for the opportunity to work with her.

Great for my student

Chemistry topics for my 10th grader. Covered the topics and advanced him over upcoming material. Saw my son smiling, which is the best feedback of all. I will use J.R. again for sure.

Tutor responded:

Alan. Thank you very much for your positive feedback. Nothing makes me feel better than to know that I had a positive influence on a young mind. So glad that your son had a rewarding experience.

Knowledgeable and kind tutor.

Dr. Simon was very helpful in teaching concepts ranging from gases to thermochemistry. He helped solidify concepts and walk me through problems without directly giving me the answer. I learned a lot about the background behind processes, as well as tips and tricks to not make similar mistakes repeatedly. Would highly recommend.

Knowledgable and helpful

He helped significantly in understanding harder concepts but breaking them down. He helped me see the bigger picture and actually comprehend the material. He would work out problems with me and go over each step if I was confused.

Stephanie , 3 lessons with J.R.

excellent!!!!!

J.R. taught me many concepts from chem 2 in a way I could understand them. He was consistent and available. He was excellent and patient and could teach very complex concepts and calculations.

Tutor responded:

Thanks Lily. It was a pleasure working with you over the past year, and I hope you did well in your chemistry course. Also, good luck in your future endeavors.

Knowledgeable and patient

Really helped me understand my math equations better as well as gain confidence to continue on my own. Helped me with making sure I had the right formulas. He was patient and kind and very straightforward.

Tutor responded:

Thanks for the kind words John. I’m glad I was able to answer your questions in a manner that made sense and hope that my explanations were adequate. I’ll look forward to working with you again.

Accommodating and Fantastic Chemistry Tutor

To begin with, JR was extremely accommodating with scheduling. He went, above and beyond, with fitting me into his hectic schedule. Being around finals time, this was overly appreciated! In addition, JR willingly met with me online, and for me, this was a “lifesaver”! Secondly, JR made everything excessively understandable and very clear. He focused on where I was requesting help, and he didn’t waste any time during our tutoring sessions. I asked for additional practice worksheets, and those were provided. JR was thorough, professional, and NOT dull and boring which was a definite bonus. Because of tutoring with JR, my final went very well. Without his help, I’d really rather not think about how it might have gone! Without a doubt, JR definitely knows the material. He knows what he’s talking about. The final that JR helped me with was a college exam in chemistry, as I’m an engineering undergraduate at the University of Dayton. So again, he’s a fantastic and very knowledgeable tutor! I’d recommend him to anyone! He’ll definitely help you learn the material!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a nice review. I hope you are doing well.

Flexible and incredibly knowledgeable tutor

My 10th grade needed help with chemistry and we didn’t give J.R. much notice and he made it happen. My daughter was in tears that day over chemistry but after meeting with J.R. her knowledge, confidence and understanding was unbelievable. We are so grateful and highly recommend him. We will be using his services again in the future.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for your positive comment. I always try my best to relate to each student and their specific needs. I’m very gratified to hear that I had some small, positive influence on your daughter's confidence in dealing with her chemistry studies. Good luck to her going forward, and I’d be happy to work with her in the future should the need arise.

Knowledgeable, patient and good teacher

My son is taking an summer chemistry class through IUPUI that moves through the material very quickly. J.R.S. Has been able to take a large amount of material and break it down into information my son can understand and grasp. J.R.S. has a mastery of the material, and knows tricks and tips to help my son learn it effectively and he paced the session very well. My son really enjoyed working with him and looks forward to more sessions.
