I am a native Russian speaker, with a Master's degree in Russian Philology (specializing in Russian language) from a Russian University. I have over 10 years of practical experience as a teacher and instructor, ranging from beginner to advanced students, from one-on-one to small groups. I am likely most effective with college and adult students, both casual and professional, at any level of proficiency (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

Many tutors have unrelated degrees or merely possess teaching certificates that are awarded after only a month or, in the best case, three months, of on-line learning. However, few are as specialized, and fewer still combine academic qualification with real world experience.

I have a deep understanding of the diagnostic assessment process and ILR scale. I worked with private institutions and organizations, journalists, doctors, US government employees and I taught in the best foreign language school in the military, if not the world. My students achieve very high scores on their tests (including DLPT) and also on their oral proficiency interviews.

I continue to travel to Russia, in part to keep abreast of changes in how Russian is actually spoken by modern Russians. While I understand the usefulness of textbooks and pre-prepared teaching materials, I do not rely on them completely, and I think it is important to notice how the language evolves, and teach these most up-to-date nuances to my students.

So why would you want to learn Russian?

For those wishing to enjoy the intellectual challenge of another language, my specific educational background in Russian philology is an ideal match.
For those who wish to travel to Russia (an increasingly popular tourist destination) or a Russian-speaking country, I have lived there for many years, and know both the culture and language very well, and as I mentioned, I continue to travel there to note the changes, so I see Russia as both a native and a tourist.
For those who simply wish to correspond with another native Russi

Aside from being a native Russian speaker, I have a Master of Arts degree in Russian with a specialization in teaching Russian language and a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Russian in the field of Philology. As part of my formal education, I have had practical experience teaching Russian, both as a part of course work and privately. Both my formal studies and real-world experience have introduced me to many of the more interesting aspects of Russian language, including its grammar, style, history and communicative nuances. Now I'd like to share my knowledge and expertise with those who are interested in learning and appreciating Russian culture and language. In terms of teaching style, I believe that results depend quite a bit on the cooperative efforts of both teacher and student, and so I see it as my role to help facilitate this. I feel I am more effective providing an individual approach to all my students. In this regard, I believe flexibility and creativity are the keys to effective teaching; I teach the way you learn.

An Experienced and Dedicated Tutor

There is no better teacher than Natalia. I came to Natalia with many requests and she delivered better than I could have ever asked for. With each session, she came prepared with activities, drills, and assignments that focused on both what I requested and what, as a philologist, she recognized as weaknesses. After a few lessons with her, my progress was already noticeable. Now, after several lessons, I am able to speak, read, and write Russian at a level considerably higher than peers who have studied for the same time. If I have a question about grammar, context, or culture, Natalia is able to answer it. I specifically appreciate Natalia’s customized approach to my learning, where we complement lesson materials with personal interests while still focusing on key proficiencies. These have made my lessons with her not only very interesting, but also even more applicable to my own ambitions. I cannot more highly recommend Natalia as a tutor.

As one of the best students I have ever taught, and one whose innate talents I have been happy to amplify, I deeply appreciate the recognition of the time and effort I have always put into teaching. Those efforts have not gone unrewarded; you are always very prepared, dedicated, receptive, and a pleasure to work with, and a great example to others that with a serious approach, diligence and effort, impressive results can be achieved. Thank you so much, Joanna!

You will not find a better Russian teacher than Natalia

Natalia's native and deep academic knowledge of the Russian language and culture make her a formidable teacher. She teaches because she loves to teach and cares about the results. Her syllabus for guiding non-native speakers into the language is effective and logical. Personally, Natalia is a lot of fun, and she accommodates for those with temperamental schedules. You will not find a better teacher.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I am learning basic Russian very pleasantly, at a fast clip!! Natalia works very hard, both during class time and outside of class, to provide personal practical and useful information. The class sessions are thorough, but the time goes by very quickly. Natalia is an extremely gifted instructor and tutor.

Knowledgable, patient and encouraging

Natalia is one of the best tutors I've had the pleasure of working with. She lays out a clear plan and is encouraging every step of the way. If I had teachers like her in school I'd be much better off in many areas! I appreciate how much work she puts in between lessons- a clear sign she cares very much about the progress of her students. Try a lesson with her, I'm sure you'll see that learning a new language is far less intimidating with Natalia on your side :)

Tnank you, Lee, for your kind words! I appreciate it very much. You are a very responsible, precise, and apt student, and I enjoy seeing your progress. You also have some of the best pronunciation I've seen in anyone I've yet to teach. I look forward to continuing to helping you in your journey to learn the Russian language.

Very Patient, helpful and knowledgeable

I came in knowing almost nothing of the Russian language. Natalia is a professional. Very patient, knowledgeable and her lessons push you to really learn the language - which is exactly what I was looking for. If you're looking to learn Russian, Natalia is the person to go to.

Thank you, Paul, for your enthusiastic endorsement! Good teaching is always a synergy; someone who is willing to teach, and someone who is willing to learn, and you clearly are both motivated and intellectually curious enough to make teaching a pleasure.

Knowledgable and patient tutor!

Really helpful getting through review and helping me enunciate while speaking! Although we are just starting at the beginning level, she has been so helpful to me with getting all the basics drilled in my head.

As always, I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to leave a good review and values the time I take in preparation and execution for each individual class. I look forward to working with one another and hope you will have another opportunity to leave your impressions of our time together once you have achieved what you have set out to accomplish. Thanks!

In-depth, personalized, and extremely helpful tutor

Natalia has helped me so much with my Russian. Coming from a college course, there were many points of grammar that were still fuzzy to me. Working with a textbook, conversational exercises, and reading materials has really helped elevate my understanding. I was also shocked by how much my speaking improved. I feel much more comfortable speaking spontaneously, and I think this is due in large part to Natalia's willingness to listen and guide me every step of the way. Our lessons also have an excellent structure. We usually just chat for the first few minutes, and I find that it's a great way to hone new grammar concepts and practice both listening and speaking. She also includes personal anecdotes, history, and culture in our lessons, which has proven very useful in deepening my knowledge of Russian society — one so inextricable from its language. Our lessons feel very tailored to my needs, and they are neither unchallenging nor beyond my grasp. I cannot recommend her more highly.

Tutor responded:

And I must thank you, Tyler, for being an exeptionally receptive, excellent and enthusiastic student in terms of your study of Russian language and culture! It's my great pleasure to teach you and I am encouraged by observing your ongoing mastery of the Russian language, and the ease and speed with which you do so. It is always gratifying to guide talent.

An excellent and Passionate Teacher

Natalia is an excellent and passionate teacher. This is my first time to learn Russian but she is making it easy, despite it is a difficult language especially when it comes to grammar. I am learning a lot and start to love the language. She provides a lot of exercises and homework that help enforce the vocabulary and grammar learned during class. Thank you Natalia for making Russian easy to learn.

Sameh, 125 lessons with Natalia
Tutor responded:

Yes, Russian is a difficult language, and that difficulty can be discouraging. I am always encouraged when I see someone face that difficulty easily and positively. I am proud that I could be part of that process. Thank you, Sameh, for your genuine interest in both Russian language and culture, and for making all my efforts so worthwhile.

Experienced, Native, and Highly Qualified Instructor

I worked with Natalia for a short time, and sadly our courses ended, due to my own scheduling issues, but the knowledge I acquired in the short timeframe gave me an immense jump in my Russian language study. I had little experience with the Russian language, and she was able to adapt quick and provide many different materials to learn from, including textbooks, video's, worksheets, and her 24/7 availability for questions before and after our sessions. As a grad students preparing to be in a Russian speaking country, it was imperative I get a jump start and build a strong foundation in Russian. She knew this and worked diligently with me to achieve that. I would send her my completed exercises and she would quickly send them back with amendments and direct comments, so I could be ready with a clear understanding in the next session. Natalia impressed me as a language professor for her keen insight in the language (she is a native speaker) and more so on her ability to find the best way to teach to you, as a unique individual. She incorporates Russian cultural notes and works to bring you to a level of understand the culture and the language that surpassed my expectations from an online tutor. She is highly educated and can even offer Russian literature sessions, which I believe I will be back for, in the later future. I know there are many tutors on Wyzant, but I believe, as a graduate student, who has been through a few languages courses taught by well paid professors, cheap in-training grad students, and in country programs, what Natalia has to offer as a Russian language instructor is more than enough to help you reach your goals. I have thoroughly appreciated what she has offer me and I hope if you're a serious student of the Russian language or want to be one, to give Natalia a try.
