My passion is realizing the potential of technology to bring people together, mobilize collective action, and create real change in the world.

In various roles, I have taught Yoga, coding, digital marketing, public speaking, and math subjects ranging from basic Algebra to Trigonometry. In my current job as social media manager I am responsible for leading training workshops on digital content production.

I tutored for 2 years at Santa Monica College, for the department of Computer Science and Computer Information Systems. The subjects I work with and the students I work with are diverse. The subjects I tutor PHP/mysQL, and from Adobe Dreamweaver to Wordpress. Although my main focus in learning is web programming, I have kept myself familiar with many general purpose languages such as C, Visual Basic, and Java as I also help students frequently with these subjects.

I consider code debugging to be a crucial skill, and this is something I have worked hard to attain. over my work in assisting students faced with 'bugs' in code. I devised a set of techniques to troubleshoot programming code, which many students over the semesters used with much success - whether to Visual Basic, or to Java, or javascript. Some of the problem solving techniques are effectively done on pen marker and paper and not merely on the computer screen. I like to teach the use of native tools such as Google Chrome Developer which offer - once familiar - an excellent and fast tool to solve problems with web source code and css that can't be as easily solved with text editors such as Dreamweaver (my favorite web authoring tool), Aptana Studio, or Expression Web, or advanced search tools including search tools on the web.

I am a believer in the Socratic approach, emphasizing my essential role as ultimately showing students how important it is to formulate quality questions as the key to quality answers or solutions. Thus by asking the right question or questions, I can empower the student to find their own solutions.

Public Speaking

I took numerous courses in college in public speaking to overcome my initial fear of public speaking. I majored in Communication Studies for my undergrad program, during which I participated in an internship teaching a workshop in public speaking to a group of K-12 students. I have also taught numerous workshops in social media in my later work. I am always an avid learner on rhetoric, its context to the digital age, and the ways in which visual aids can be optimized for presentations.

Computer

Computer Programming,

Computer Programming

Classes I currently tutor at Santa Monica College are C, Visual Basic, C++, Java (intro and advanced), PHP, advanced web scripting, Dreamweaver I and II, Javascript, and web design with HTML5/CSS. I emphasize the use of pencil, paper, and marker to map out and plan the programming solutions (including pseudocode and mind mapping) as a first step to make the coding more efficient, structured, and trial-and-error-free. I learned from my experience in tutoring that certain habits applied makes programming not only more manageable, but also much less intimidating to the student, thus leading to more confidence in the student. I also emphasize leading the student more with questions, to help them better discover their own answers.
JavaScript,

JavaScript

I have taken courses in web programming at Santa Monica College. I also tutored for 2 years there in subjects ranging from C to C++, html and css to WordPress, Java to VB.net, PHP to Javascript and Advanced Web Scripting (a class covering front-end and back-end programming including MySQL and PHP). I have 3 years of subsequent experience tutoring privately, my main concentration between Java and web programming. I also have tutored in specific areas, such as jQuery and Bootstrap. For beginners: I will empower students with debugging techniques, including the use of the Javascript console and Chrome Developer tools. I will teach by creating a foundation of Javascript coding syntax using active programming tasks, including arrays, functions, conditionals and loops, inline versus external scripts. For intermediate students: I cover the Browser Object Model, the DOM, event handling, the form object, anonymous functions, and dynamic HTML via CSS and Javascript. For advanced students I cover: callback functions, form-handling, communicating with a web server by AJAX, JSON, and XML Object-Oriented features of Javascript including the Object Prototypes, constructors, the “this” keyword.

Great tutor who cares!

Kevin is a methodical tutor who prepares well-beforehand of a class to make sure you as the student get the most out of the class. He uses different approaches depending on the student's needs and understanding of the material. This means he will customize his methods to your needs and knowledge level on your subject material. He cares about his students and puts in the much appreciated time and effort. He's also flexible with scheduling so if it's midterm week and you need that extra time and attention, he's able to work with your needs. I'm studying CS and plan to have him for every course that I feel needs his expertise. A++

Quick and Proficient Personable Tutor

Kevin demonstrates excellent communication skills, proficiency in Wordpress, professional demeanor with Wyzant online tools and resources, and is very flexible with scheduling. I would recommend him for tutoring before asking anyone else.

Knowledgeable, patient, and understanding tutor

Kevin has been helping me in my Discrete Structures Computer Mathematics class this semester. He has been very helpful and makes it easy for me to understand what the problem is, why and how to solve it. He is very understanding and is willing to go the extra mile.

Great 1st Lesson

We had our first lesson with Kevin on a new AP Computer Science Principles class. My daughter indicated Kevin explains the concepts well. Not only that, I'm most impressed with the fact that he is willing to spend time checking out the website our school uses for this class prior to our first lesson. I'll definitely recommend Kevin!

Outstanding Teacher

Definitely a tutor I would recommend! He will patiently and thoroughly teach you complex topics and make sure you understand it. He teaches topics passionately and clearly and can even make the hardest and the most difficult topics interesting and easy-to-understand. 10/10 Would recommend to every student having difficulties.

Such a great tutor.

I am so glad to meet Kevin in person. He is such an amazing and smart guy. He would go over and over for you to understand and never go to the next point till he asks you if you are following. Even after we finished the lessen we enjoyed talking about school and random topics. I am definitely going to meet him again soon for my finals.

Excellent intuition and patient teacher

Kevin is a great tutor. He listens very well to understand the big picture of a particular computing problem, and then begins the patient task of constructing logic pathways to map the machine output. He was right when he told me that most of the programming work must be done with pencil and paper first, before any of the actual code can be entered into the computer. He has an intuitive gift.

Good tutor.

Kevin taught me a real lot in a short time (not to mention, on a Friday evening, for 3 hours our first session). We covered the beginning basics of web design. This guy is focused and passionate and very easy to connect with. Very professional, very high quality. Highly recommend.

Kevin was patient and made sure that I understood how to do things.

He helped me overcome my problems with Dreamweaver. He had no problem going over a lesson a few times until he knew that I knew how to do it by myself.

Very good tutor!

Kevin is a very nice and good tutor. My son had fallen behind due to illness and Kevin has helped him catch up (and beyond) within a week! My son is now feeling confident and positive about his Java class. We highly recommend him!
