Hello, I'm Jessica! I have a Bachelor's degree in English, a Master's degree in English, and a Master's degree in Library Science. I have 10+ years of experience working with students of all ages to improve writing, reading, and research skills.
I have tutoring experience working with students one-one-one or in small groups. I enjoy these settings, because I can tailor my lesson to address the specific struggles of the individual student(s). For example, if I am working with a student who struggles with reading, and I know that student does not find sight words helpful, I will change the focus of my lesson. We might use Elkonin boxes to separate words into the different sounds or syllables, or we might use rhyme to help the student sound out words they don't know. With all of my students, I work to remain flexible in my lesson planning so we find the tools that lead to their success.
I take a similar approach with college and adult students. I tailor my lessons around WHY an individual is seeking help in a particular subject. If a college student is struggling with online research, I won't start my lesson with the broad strokes of why we do research. We will dive right in with strategies to find credible online sources and how to analyze those sources to find the useful information. Additionally, if I am working with an adult that struggles with writing reports for work, I won't ask that student to write me a research paper. We will look at the writing style that is most effective for work-based communication, break down the different components of that writing style, and practice strategies to edit their writing and make it stronger.
I want all my students to walk away with strategies that work for their brain and will make them more successful. But I am always learning as well, and would welcome any resources or suggestions students or parents can provide! I work hard to always provide fast responses, so feel free to contact me with questions or to schedule a lesson! I look forward to working with you!
