Helping students truly comprehend and master their subjects has been my goal for 30 years. I have worked with students ranging in age from preschoolers to adults in their sixties. Whether they're learning to read, struggling to comprehend algebra homework, or preparing to take a standardized test for admission to college or graduate programs, my students' learning style determines how I explain the material. If you don't understand something, then it's my responsibility to figure out how to...

If you don't understand something, then it's my responsibility to figure out how to help you to understand.

My tutoring career began during my time at the University of Michigan. After graduating with B.A. degrees in Economics and German, and having earned my teaching certification, I continued working with students in a variety of settings. My preference has always been small group or individual instruction, rather than large classrooms.

I enjoy watching my students grow in confidence as they have success in areas that are difficult for them. That confidence spreads outward to other subjects and other areas of students' lives. The individualized instruction I provide makes a real difference in people's lives.

My students frequently tell me that they never really understood math until they worked with me, and that I have a knack for explaining things in a way that just makes sense.

Parents tell me their children have asked them, "Can you get Annette to tutor me?" and students ask me, "Can I please tutor with you this week?"

Elementary Math

For some elementary math students, memorization of addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts can be daunting. Some students need additional tools like touch math or a multiplication table to consult while they learn how to do long problems, so they can progress through the concepts regardless of how long it takes to memorize those darn facts. Other students might need different ways to visualize what area and volume mean, or how fractions work. I really enjoy helping young students overcome their nervousness around math. The confidence they gain when they start to understand it carries over into so many other areas of their lives! I have been teaching all levels of math up through pre-calculus for nearly 30 years. I have experience helping children catch up to their grade levels (outside of regular classes), as well as assisting with homework assignments.

Algebra doesn't have to be frustrating! If you are struggling with it, it's probably because you haven't had a teacher that you really clicked with, who explained it in a way that helped you understand. I'll be that teacher for you. Learning Algebra 1 is about creating pathways in your brain that help you process information is new ways, and prepare you for learning more advanced math. For some people, a good explanation is all that's needed. For others, lots of repetition is necessary. I've worked with hundreds of Algebra 1 students of all ages, from middle school through adult. I've even helped adults who've never had an algebra class learn it for the GRE exam. I'll work with you to figure out exactly what you need and provide individualized instruction to help you succeed!
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Learning Algebra 2 is about putting together all the pieces you learned in previous math classes, and exploring those concepts more fully. It's about things like moving functions around on a graph and turning exponents into logarithms...which don't have to be frustrating! The BEST tutor!

I've been tutoring with Annette for four years now and she's been able to help me with my math tutoring from high school all the way to college (and ACT prep!). She is patient and friendly and able to explain the material in multiple different ways. She has a strong attention to detail and is always able to explain each step of the problem, if I need it. She always matches my pace with whatever subject I need help on, and is truly one of the best teachers I've ever had. I can't say enough good things about Annette!

Knowledgeable and helpful, highly recommend

She helped my son who's in his senior year of college with his economic literature review paper. He was at a block and he said, "she was helpful, great to bounce ideas off of, and very knowledgeable. She was easy to talk to, listened and instructed him well. He also appreciated her quick reply request for a tutor, her prompt availability and willingness to help. He felt confident to move forward after talking with her." We'd like to say thank you Annette for helping a stressful situation turn into a positive outcome. We highly recommend her.

Innovative approach to demystifying multiplication

Annette did a fantastic job with my niece, helping her to alleviate her anxiety around really tough multiplication problems. Annette was patient, engaging, funny and made my niece extremely comfortable within the first two minutes of the session. She offered innovative tools, resources and tricks that my niece is extremely excited to implement! Would recommend Annette to anyone without reservation and look forward to working with her again in the future!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

She was willing to review problem by problem and identify areas that were not well understood. She would then explain and work the various steps until they were more clear. She would promptly identify if there was something she didn’t know and would say so. It has been vary helpful to have someone knowledgeable enough to review for exams.

Great first session

Annette helped my 13-year-old daughter work through an algebra project and some missed test questions to ensure she grasped and mastered the concepts. Disaster averted! Annette has a very kind and pleasant teaching style, and we’re glad we found her here!
