I guide writers through the development of their work — from academic writing to fiction, from application essays and test essays to plays. I have a sub-specialty in working with individuals with disabilities, including executive functioning disorders (such as ADHD), learning disabilities, and anxiety disorders; my unique coaching system supports all writers of all ages and skill levels, from high school students to doctoral candidates, by focusing on the individual's specific writing process. I conduct in-person coaching sessions in the greater Syracuse area; for those farther-flung, I am happy to arrange sessions via phone or Skype.

I received my master's in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2010, and since then I have worked as a writing coach in various capacities, with a focus on supporting students with disabilities. I have been in residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and with the Boston Teacher Residency, providing writing coaching to students in both programs, and for many years I conducted a private business as a writing coach based primarily in Boston and Cambridge. I'm currently anchored in Syracuse, NY, but happily conduct online coaching sessions.

As a practicing writer myself, I understand how intense and personal the writing process can be, and how much is at stake for writers. I am also a merciless taskmaster who can introduce structure into a process that may seem oppressively difficult. I am eager to provide structure, scaffolding, and support for the way you write.

Grammar,

Grammar

I spent two years working as an editorial assistant for an educational publishing company and two years as a private copyeditor. I'm an obsessive grammarian who enjoys helping people unearth the patterns beneath language, both "conventional" grammar and the way we actually speak. As a writing coach, I excel at helping non-native English speakers unearth the grammatical challenges in their writing. (I also won the National Language Arts Olympiad first-place medal when I was in fifth grade.)

Helps you to put together different pieces, and write a stronger paper–graduate level.

Gemma is a wonderful writing instructor. She really forces you to think, and connect what would appear at the moment unrelated. She helps you hone in on structure, and will definitely help bring to life a much stronger piece of work.

Exceptional Tutor

The college application process had started and my daughter was wrestling with the college essay. A friend, who works in a local school, recommended Gemma. My daughter and I met with her one afternoon in September and it was an incredibly positive experience from that first meeting. Gemma was fantastic, she helped my daughter organize the application process, clarify her goals, find her voice and focus on the multiple college essays. As their time together progressed, my daughter began to feel feel more confident, and ultimately wrote a number of exceptional essays. They also connected on a personal level. Gemma was a sounding board for the issues and stressors that inevitably emerged, and in the process, taught my daughter a set of writing and organizational skills that will help her through college and beyond. Gemma’s updates after every session were thoughtful and thorough and helped to keep me calm throughout the 5 month process. When all was said and done, Gabi got into her first choice school. She could not have done it without Gemma. I cannot recommend Gemma highly enough. She is exceptional, not only a gifted and talented teacher but also a kind and generous person. We are so fortunate to have her in our life.

Great for master's or PhD student seeking publication

So far Gemma sets reachable weekly goals that have helped me a leave a serious year or two of writer's block. She's also been great with visualizing the presentation of qualitative data in diagrams and figures.

Helps teach you how to write a paper

She was excellent in helping me learn how to write a paper, not doing to much work for me. Thanks Gemma.

She asked really good questions

Gemma's goal with my son was to develop a habit of mind with regard to essay writing and develop a strategy for outlining his argument and choosing relevant quotes in the text. My son said she asked really good questions and made him "dig deep" to think about the text as it relates to the prompt.

Creative and efficient tutor

My son has been working with Gemma since last Fall with the goal to become an independent and effective writer. I believe that in great part because of Gemma's creativity, professionalism and ability to engage our son was able to significantly advance himself. Gemma is always prepared and always works on a "bigger picture" not being limited to the assignment at hand. It is very important that while coaching our son on a particular homework she always makes a step toward achieving a bigger goal. We certainly plan to continue working with Gemma over the next school year.

A Very Special Tutor

We are so appreciative to Gemma for everything she has been doing to help my daughter! The two of them have a really good connection, and my daughter no longer loathes writing as she used to. Gemma has really gotten to know my daughter and her way of working. It's all going in the right direction for her, and we really have Gemma to thank for that. She is a very special "find" for us!
