Physics and mathematics can be challenging, but it doesn't have to be painful! With over 10 years teaching and tutoring experience in Physical Science, General Physics, and Engineering Physics, I know the many challenges students face. I can help you develop a personalized study plan that will ease your journey to comprehension and successful problem solving.

I emphasize core concepts and definitions, i.e. fundamental ideas. We will work to first understand the nature of the problem, second the physical principles involved, and finally how to arrive at a mathematical solution. Along the way we will gain additional insights and understanding which are often lost in a "formula" based approach.

I enjoy teaching and look forward to those moments when a student's face "lights up" with understanding! I can offer a very flexible schedule to meet your needs and will work with you to develop study methods which facilitates your comprehension of the material. You will find me to be both patient and persistent, with a sincere interest in helping you acquire mastery of your subject.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

A firm grasp of the techniques of Algebra I are crucial to any continuation of study in mathematics. I can draw on my own skills, expertise, and experience in tutoring an teaching, to help insure that you not only gain a firm grasp of the subject matter, but also to prepare you for additional levels of study.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Both Algebra I and Algebra II pave the way for higher studies in mathematics. I can help you reinforce the skills you are seeking to acquire in the classroom and work your way past any troublesome concepts that interfere with your mastery of the material. I will draw on my experiences to help you develop a clear grasp of the material at each step of the way.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is a challenging and diverse subject, which calls heavily on skills acquired in previous study of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. It is also one of the principal mathematical tools used in physics and engineering. With my PhD in physics, I have had to make extensive use of calculus, both in my own studies as well as my lecture presentations. I can draw on my experience to help you gain proficiency in this often bewildering subject.

Physics

I have a PhD in Physics with 10 years experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate students.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is a time to review the fundamental concepts of mathematics and to begin honing the skills necessary to successful mastery of more future math courses. With the skills and knowledge I have gained with over 10 years of tutoring and teaching experience I can help you reinforce the foundation skills you have already acquired and in addition develop an understanding of the concepts and tools essential to mastering Algebra and beyond.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

The study of calculus draws heavily on many of the ideas and techniques acquire in geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. I can help you identify those fundamental which are crucial to future success and help you strengthen the core skills and knowledge which are essential for mastering the techniques of calculus.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

The SAT tests are designed to assess both a students knowledge as well as the student's ability to reason and analyze. The very nature of these tests can present challenges for students who are not comfortable with the multiple choice testing or word problem format. The test covers a wide range of material, from prealgebra through algebra 2, as well as geometry and trigonometry. Careful attention needs to be paid to the wording of the questions and to distinguish between similar possible answer choices to determine the correct response. I can help you develop the reasoning skill necessary to enhance your ability to find the correct answer and to recognize unsuitable choices in the multiple choice format and to construct clear, well defined solutions.
SAT Reading

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

The ACT relies primarily on word style problems in a multiple choice format to assess a student's ability to understand precisely what is being asked, and to formulate a correct response. Critical reasoning rather than a demonstration of memorized formulas is what is expected and required for successful completion of the test. I can help you interpret these word style problems, and to then translate that understanding into a mathematical expression that will allow you to select the appropriate response.

Science

ACT Science,

ACT Science

The science portion of the ACT places an emphasis on short essay style presentations of subject matter relevant to the possible multiple choice responses. Students are tested not so much on knowledge that they have retained from previous coursework, rather they are tested on their ability to read critically and to extract the information necessary and relevant for an accurate response. I can assist you in developing the reasoning and problem solving skills necessary to successfully and accurately completing these types of multiple choice word problems.

Great SAT prep support

We utilized Stephen to help our son address areas of concern in the math portion of the SAT exam. In working with Stephen over several sessions the improvement in understanding of the subject matter as well as confidence was great. Would use again.
