I have a PhD from Trinity College Dublin with a completed dissertation on Shakespeare. Beyond my research, I also have sevens years experience teaching at universities, five of those years were specifically spent teaching college freshman how to write. I specialize in helping your child learn how to construct a solid essay that is well-argued, well researched, proofread, and uses extraordinary vocabulary. All of my composing tutoring sessions include vocabulary building.

Beyond my college level teaching experience, I also have several years experience working with well-known tutoring companies as an ACT/SAT test prep, elementary math, reading (all levels), algebra, geometry, biology, and chemistry tutor. Because of my advanced degree I am usually asked to provide higher level tutoring (high school and above); however, I LOVE tutoring elementary and middle school children. I thoroughly enjoy helping students grasp the fundamentals of math and reading. I relish the questions these students ask me, as it often requires a more philosophic answer. I rely heavily on the Socratic Method--which is a fancy name for asking a lot of questions. My tutoring is much less of a lecture and more of a discussion. I would rather lead my student to the answer and have them discover it for themselves than simply point to it in the book. I want my students to learn how to "teach themselves" so that when I am no longer around they will have the skills to be successful for whatever they choose to do in life. I firmly believe in the power of education, and I will do everything I can to help your child succeed.

I am a young tutor which means I relate well to the students and to the distractions they have going on around them. I'm not going to harangue them for preferring to practice soccer (or any other sport) than to finish their math homework. However, I WILL emphasize how important their math homework is, and I will work hard to make tutoring an engaging and FUN experience. They might never love tutoring as much as sports (or music,

Part of my experience as a college instructor was ensuring my students were proficient public speakers, since so many students are required to be good at speaking in front of groups for their jobs. In addition, I worked with a professional Shakespearean theatre company where I learned a lot of useful techniques for articulation and enunciation.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I used to tutor elementary school students. I have experience building proficiency in reading as well as working with students on note taking and study skills. I frequently work with elementary school students on math. My background is not based on an education degree, instead it is based on working with reputable firms as an elementary school tutor.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

As a tutor, I work hard with your child to help them learn effective ways to study. This means making the most out of the time they have. We'll learn how to take better notes in class, so reviewing notes becomes easier at home and we'll also learn how to maximize the impact each study session has. We'll also learn tools to quickly review before a big test (outlines, flash cards, etc.) that will erase late night cramming. As a college English instructor, I will also give your student proper editing and proofreading skills that they can use not only on their English paper but on any essay test.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I have tutored several groups of students preparing for the ACT Test. One of the biggest things I stress about the ACT English section is looking for key words that will help the student answer the question quickly. They have to answer 75 questions within 45 minutes! We go over grammar rules and work on strategies to help retention.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

While it might seem redundant to have a Reading test and an English test on the ACT, I can assure you it is not. Where the English section focuses on sentence structure and grammar, the Reading section is looking for comprehension. Just like the English section, time is of the essence. And I will teach your student strategies for making the most out of the allotted time. The Reading section is looking for critical thinking skills, and these I will teach your child.

I lead Bible studies at women's groups. I also have been teaching Sunday School and working as a Vacation Bible School counselor for several years. I typically work with elementary-middle school students for the Sunday School, and my peers for Bible Study.
Classics,

Classics

I am working on my PhD in English Literature with a focus on Shakespeare. In order to do this successfully I must have a strong background in the classics. By classics I am referring to ancient Greek and Roman texts. If you are looking for someone to tutor in classic literature (like Dickens or Shakespeare), I am also the tutor for you since I am getting my PhD in English Lit.
Religion,

Religion

Not only did I attend a Jesuit University at which taking religion courses are required, I also developed my philosophical understanding of religion from my experience with philosophy (taking courses such as the Philosophy of Religion). In addition, my research interests coincide with the Protestant Reformation (I am researching Shakespeare). If you are interested in my religious sentiments, please contact me. But I have sufficient training in the history of Christianity (and its interactions with other faiths) to competently and happily tutor your or your child.

My background as a Philosophy major is my overwhelming qualification for tutoring in this course. In addition, I won an award for being the best philosophy student the year I graduated. As a college composition instructor I frequently use tools from logic as I instruct my students how to best develop an argument.

Science

ACT Science,

ACT Science

ACT Science is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult sections of the ACT to prepare for largely because it comes at the very end. The mental energy from earlier in the day is fading, and it's nearly lunch time. Time management strategies are more crucial in this section that nearly any other. On the plus side, ACT Science doesn't ask general knowledge questions about physics, biology, or chemistry, but it does ask for critical thinking skills. While the Reading test looked for those only with the written word, ACT Science will look for those with graphs and charts as well. I will teach your student how to make the most out of the allotted time and the sometimes overwhelming information and beat the mental exhaustion.

Always on time, always focused

My daughter has been working with Erin since the beginning of the Winter semester and she has seen huge improvements. Her test scores have gone up and her papers reflect a more confident, and opinionated young woman. Erin consistently gets our daughter to work harder for "herself". Going into a test or writing a paper when you believe you can do it really makes a huge difference.

Very committed. Very smart !!

Erin impressed us with her tutoring. She not only knew the material I had to review without even looking at the book, she prepared lessons, study guides and questions for the next session in order to prepare me for the test. Very pleasant to deal with also !!!
