An expert in standardized test prep, with an unbroken record of improving students' scores, primarily on the SAT but also on the ACT and GRE, I also have 20 years' experience teaching English language, literature, writing and test prep (including math) at American private schools, as well as 8 years online, serving both high-performing and developing or learning-challenged students. across the humanities and arts, including history, as well as music and art history, from New Orleans to New England. This means I can help a wide variety of students, from those needing work on the fundamentals of grammar and algebra to those applying to competitive universities and needing to hone their college application essays.

I am a careful listener, an empathetic learner (I, too, have a learning difference), and a very good explainer. I use a simple, metaphor-and-analogy based system that makes even the hardest concepts easier to learn. When I work with students, they have my undivided attention and absolute respect.

I was educated at Amherst College, in MA; the University of Oxford (Lincoln College), in England; and Loyola University-New Orleans, obtaining undergraduate and advanced degrees in English as well as an advanced degree in Education. I graduated from Amherst magna cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 2000. I was voted Most Outstanding Graduate Student in the School of Education at Loyola in 2007. Teaching, I was voted Best New Teacher at a school in New Orleans in 2001, where I later became the youngest department chair in school history. Later, I moved to Western Massachusetts, where I also served as department chair, then Maine, where I began tutoring full time.

I love bike racing and backcountry skiing. My black lab is ridiculously spoiled.

Please reach out to get to know me--I would love to be part of your learning plan. My availability is very flexible.

History

Music History,

Music History

I have a deep and abiding love for classical music, the history of which I studied first in high school (part of IB course) and then at Amherst. Beyond college, I have been an active self-learner as well and have written reviews of Opera performances in New Orleans as well as tutored students in music history and writing about music at Tulane (usually, of course, for their long-put-off term papers). I am familiar with all major periods of western music, from medieval to post-modern, with particular expertise in High Classical and Late Romantic periods. I also know theory and can use this knowledge to teach technically proficient students. I have taught courses on Beethoven, Minimalism, and non-western polyphony.
Political Science,

Political Science

I was a Political Science major at Amherst College, never receiving a grade below A-. Though invited to write a thesis, I was already writing one in English, so I graduated merely "rite" (a thesis was required, at that time, for Honors distinction).

Insightful humble writing tutor

Evan looked over my daughter's college essays. He helped her organize and think deeper about how to express her thoughts while being a copilot with over 20 years of experience. She definitely improved her writing skills with just one lesson so far.

Outstanding tutor

Evan has a very good understanding of what it takes to do well when taking a standardized test Iike the SAT. His approach is helping my son to develop a solid base but also is helping him to improve his results on a weekly basis. He is an excellent tutor and we couldn’t be happier with him!

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor

He helped me with a research proposal, narrowed the relevant points, finding the right questions for the research and to put it all together. He also helped me with the technology part, which was very helpful since we had an online session.

Smart, kind and targeted

Evan did his homework and was very prepared and ready to help my daughter with her prep for the ACT. Was a pleasure to work with and would highly recommend him.

Great math tutor!!!

I am a 27 year old college student and Evan helped me immensely in an intensive week long tutoring course on Algebra and Geometry. He is extremely patient and knowledgeable on a variety of different math disciplines and can teach across multiple skill levels. He is extremely professional and keeps the lesson on track while also being incredibly friendly and clearly has a gift for connecting with young people. Finally, Evan may be slightly more expensive than many of his fellow tutors, but the extra cost is the difference between a grad student trying to make a little extra money and a true educational professional like Evan. 5 Stars!
