Grammar

Grammar

In my 15 years of experience prepping students for the ACT and SAT, the fastest way to increase their skills has been to teach them higher grammar. Why? Writing (SAT) and English (ACT) have a great deal to do with grammar, and clear, uncluttered sentences. If you want to quickly raise your standardized test scores, I can help you do it!

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a CT teaching license in Special Ed, but I enjoy working with children who have "fallen behind" as well. I set up tutoring sessions which double up learning: reading science and history articles and writing about them, designing science projects, graphing the results and using math to quantify out-comes. I like to explore a student's interests and create lessons based on them, such as one on the Titanic for a 5th grader. I read through transcripts of the inquiry and took names of key players in the decisions made on the Titanic's fateful night. Then my students wrote "their" stories in the first person as two of the shipmates. Neither of the boys was considered a "good" writer, but both enjoyed the experience of using the research to write their own tales!
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is more important than ever, as the state keeps insisting on getting more math learned younger than ever. Still, math must be learned one step at a time, with lots of review and a keen eye to seeing if a child understands at a deep level or a superficial one. Diagnostics must be done to see which parts of math are missed. One on one tutoring is the best way to learn those tedious but essential skills like adding and subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators. Middle school is often where frustration with math becomes math anxiety if not addressed. The ideal is to move at a pace the child can experience success at and introduce games and fun.

Phonics,

Phonics

With the CAPTs have come more pressure to have younger children enter school knowing more than ever before! Lately, I have been tutoring children who were threatened with retention, from PreSchool to 5th grade. For the youngest, phonics is the entry ticket. Being able to sound out words, gaining the confidence to read comfortably opens all school doors. They can read directions, read their math book, read the list they brought home - suddenly, they are in the part of class that leads the action. The greatest benefit is their continued self-esteem that being a good reader brings.
Reading,

Reading

In elementary school, one learns to read; by middle school children read to learn. A key part of teaching reading in late elementary is to expand vocabulary and distinguish between the reader's point of view and the knowledge being shared. I make sure the struggling or early reader finds their personal interests, and help them choose short books or poems that engage them. As students enter 3rd or 4th grade, I find articles in science or history, both to elevate their vocabulary and to offer time to discuss new ideas.

Geography

Geography

I taught History and Geography to both middle and high school classes and I am a big fan of geography. I usually teach it as a side skill and incorporate using graphs, charts, atlas and many kinds of maps. I teach about how maps change once wars are fought and as cultures self-identify. This is a favorite topic of mine, which is sadly now missing from most schools.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra l is full of fun puzzles to unravel, but some students have a weak background on understanding the language of mathematics and get lost. The craft of adding one new piece to all the others, gently developing confidence and flexibility with the new skill, is work I enjoy. I will observe a student's approach to attaching a problem. How many strategies do they try? Many problems can be solved several ways so the art is in aiding the student to find the most efficient style with ways to check the results. I love Algebra and I believe I can help you to find the art in it as well.

Geometry,

Geometry

I recently taught a home-schooled girl l0th grade Geometry, so I am experienced not just with tutoring it, but with teaching the entire subject. Some students use analytic skills to solve geometry problems, some draw out the answers, some just GET geometry intrinsically. Whatever your style, I will adapt the course to fit your learning style. 7th grade geometry needs to be deep enough to prepare the student for high school geometry, which many find overwhelming. The practice questions need to be diverse enough to help students see the geometry in real life problem solving. Using 3-dimensional models is both fun and memorable - what student forgets the geodesic dome they made? The more modalities used, the deeper the knowledge so that it is truly learned, not just memorized in time for a test.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is the term for all those pieces of mathematics you need to know to function comfortably in Algebra and Geometry. It includes using negative numbers, percents, fractions, decimals, number line work, and increased skill using word problems. Geometry is taken to a higher level - an often overlooked but essential middle school skill. Too many people struggle with high school geometry because this step is given short shrift. While helping with current homework, I usually analyze test scores and CMT data so I can quickly identify what areas the student is struggling with. I create reviews to strengthen areas of weakness. I learn the sequence the teacher has planned and proactively "pre-teach" subjects for increased school success. Students I work with frequently go from Ds to As in one quarter, become more prepared for high school math and experience higher self confidence.

The ADD and ADHD students I have worked with do extremely well with tutoring or learning in small groups! Very verbal learners, for the most part, they can learn in while on monkey bars, on walks or while skipping stones. Usually, a high degree of what is heard is remembered. I have developed an entire system of teaching ADD/ADHD students which involves academic diagnostics, verbal math strategies such as skip counting, co-reading subjects that are highly interesting with the student, books on audio tape and computer programs. I have had students learn a years worth of material in 2 months this way, making tutoring a great investment!
Hard of Hearing,

Hard of Hearing

I earned my AS degree from Northwestern, where I studies ASL and Interpreting for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I went on to get a BS in Special Education. This doesn't make me a certified Deaf Educator, but I have tutored many deaf and Hard of Hearing students. For most deaf students, reading is a challenge. There are so many things that are not part of their world that get referred to, so part of the job involves explaining concepts they are reading in terms we share. Hard of hearing students benefit greatly from tutoring, as there is just one conversation to follow, they relax and feel more at ease sharing their thoughts. On many occasions, I have been the student's first sign language teacher as well. They may be able to hear well enough for most things, but enjoy being part of the deaf community when it suits them. I have worked with a first grader who was deafened suddenly, helping her to learn new ways of coping with a world gone silent overnight. I have taught two boys enough sign and corrected behavioral issues that had kept them from being accepted into the American School for the Deaf. Disabilities don't always come one at a time. In the hearing Impaired world, they can come with strokes or mental illness, so often you need a tutor with a broader range of experiences who can cope with all the other issues as well.

The PSAT is a shorter version of the SAT. The SAT has been recently redesigned by the educator who designed the Common Core. This helps the students in that it is now more in line with what they are learning in school. Many parents find the Common Core confusing! I admit, it has taken me a while to conquer, but I see its advantages. The world is changing, especially the world of math and science. This test sees it is necessary to blend the boundaries of math and science. For students to read science and history well, so it will overlap in many places throughout the test. My goal is to aid students in identifying areas they struggle with and give them a stronger, more thorough understanding of how to develop their reading skills for all settings and strengthen their math skills and ability to identify strategies for success. The PSAT is also used for colleges to identify early the strong scholars they wish to attract to their schools, so it can not be over looked as just a preparation for the SAT. Successful PSAT students find offering of scholarship money.

SSAT

The SSAT is an excellent test! It takes practice but does a thorough job of preparing the student to be ready for the challenges required in a private school environment. Practice tests will find any weaknesses and give you an opportunity to congratulate yourself on your strengths. For test prep tutoring, I always advise the student to give 90 minutes per session; this way there is time for test practice, reviewing answers and developing an understanding of basic strategies for managing time. Think of this dedication of time as a gift which will allow you to perform at your best once you enter the school of your choice!

exceptional tutor!

There are many good tutors available, but few exceptional ones. Pat is exceptional. My child had a math tutor, and later started with Pat for English grammar and reading. During a session with Pat, he asked for help on a math problem. Afterwards, he told me she was, "way better than his math tutor". She is truly qualified in all the subjects she tutors. This offers invaluable convenience. Pat helped me with writing, so I also experienced her expertise. She uses time very efficiently, is always prepared, and her comments and suggestions after each session are detailed and useful. Her price is very reasonable and she goes out of her way to accommodate schedules. She is busy for good reason. Book a session with her and you will see!

Amazing

My son has struggled with math all through middle and high school. He made the decision to join the military but struggled when it came to the asvab. In six months of working with Pat he officially passed. His confidence in math has made changed he even commented that he felt smarter than he ever has. That speaks volumes for a kid that didn’t like school. She comes to every session prepared and with materials geared towards the day. Would recommend her 1000%. I tell her all the time I wish we found her years ago.

Patient and relaxed tutor

My 9 year old grandson had his first session with Patricia this weekend. He seemed to feel at ease right away. She has a calming demeanor that helped him with his anxiety about the session and surprisingly for a child with ADHD he was very focused with her . They worked on reading skills and counting money. Patricia seemed very competent and I am optimistic that she will help my grandson with his learning difficulties. We look forward to working with her again.

Pat is GREAT!

We just started our tutoring journey with Pat, and she has already surpassed our expectations! Pre-algebra can be a difficult subject for most students! Especially a 14-year-old boy who would rather be playing basketball instead of doing math equations. But he is actually enjoying his sessions with Pat, she is patient and makes him feel 100% comfortable with her tutoring methods. He has already learned new skills/tricks that he's applying to his daily studies, which is assisting him with his confidence in this subject! We are looking forward to further sessions with Pat and seeing advancements in this subject! :)
