I am a recent grad from the Brown/RISD dual degree program; a prestigious 5-year program where I received a BA in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University and a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.
While I did not major in Education in undergrad, most of my work experience has been in the field. I have 4 years of education experience, holding titles such as a tutor, coach, counselor, and director. I have taught students of all ages, but I've mostly worked with students ages 12 to 20 years old.
My first job in education was as an art teacher's assistant. As an art TA, I helped each of my students make better drawings in a classroom setting.
The following year, I worked for an organization called City Year. City Year places tutors like me in schools to help students who need extra support. While working for City Year, I helped middle school math students reach their academic and social goals through high-dosage tutoring and mentoring.
After a year, my "City Year" was over, so I began working as an ESL teacher and tutor. At the time, I mostly worked with local immigrants and refugee students in my community. For all my ESL students, I taught my lessons entirely in English. For my older, more advanced students, I focused on reading comprehension and vocabulary, preparing material on prefixes, suffixes, and base words to build their vocabulary. For my beginner students of all ages, I developed lessons based on prior class conversations to build on students' experiences and interests.
I came out of university with a year of ESL tutoring experience and 5 months experience teaching ESL in the classroom supporting adult learners and adolescents alike.
