Thank you for reading my profile regarding tutoring your son, daughter, or yourself.

I have 35 years of teaching experience in the Life Sciences, Biology, and Environmental Biology at the Junior High School, High School, and College level. As a recipient of The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, I value education and enjoy sharing my knowledge in a clear and concise manner.

I utilize a wide range of visuals and hands-on practical examples to enhance the lesson/subject being taught. The sessions are highly interactive between tutor and student with constant checking for understanding of concepts. Homework assigned after each session reflects rigor and relevancy of the life science concept(s) being presented. This completed document will be assessed at the beginning of the next session. Any concerns will be addressed at that time before continuing with another subject/topic. Students are encouraged to ask questions at any time during the tutoring session.

Each student has individual needs and goals, and I utilize materials that increases success for the Regents, SAT Subject Test, and classroom examinations by making difficult concepts easy to understand. Emphasis is also placed on the organization of a student's classroom notebook, and study skills which can enhance the learning.

Flexibility on time and location can be mutually agreed upon, so everyone's schedule is accommodated. A 24 hour courtesy cancellation notice is required for scheduled tutoring to avoid being charged the hourly rate. Rescheduling tutoring sessions are available when requested. Tutoring sessions can be structured for individual or groups.

I look forward to meeting and helping you achieve the maximum success in the life sciences! Thank for your time.

Biology

Biology

I have an excellent working knowledge of the subject Biology. I have 35 years of teaching experience at the Junior High School (one year), and the High School (34 years). These classes were titled General Science, Science For Living, Living World, Biology, and Honors Biology. In addition, I have taught the college introduction biology class called BIO 100 Biology Concepts, and BIO 105 Environmental Biology (20 years part-time). All institutional classes included a lecture and a laboratory. The combination of these modalities allows students to use inquiry for critical thinking, as they deal with relevant and rigorous questions. The use of hands-on life science experiences, combined with practical applications, creates students who are more organized in their thinking and more thoughtful in their approach to scientific problems. Topics include but are not limited to: Scientific inquiry and the living process, Cell, Genetics, Homeostasis, Reproduction, Evolution, Ecology, Human Impact. These units will prepare students for the Regents and Subject tests.

Botany,

Botany

I have a strong working knowledge of Horticulture, Botany, and Agriculture. I received my CTE certification for Agriculture: Plant Sciences in AZ and NY. As the sole Botany Teacher for the entire school district (Tempe Union High School District), I was responsible for greenhouse operations of growing, maintaining, and propagating plants which included biology/botany HS students, ASU student teachers, and department colleagues. My experience is drawn from the following: Horticulturist at the Desert Botanical Garden (5 years), yearly youth garden grants from the City of Tempe Water Deptment (11 years), presenter, workshop attendee, for Master Gardener conferences and classes at the local Cooperative Extension. Taught plant anatomy and physiology, pruning, propagation, IPM, etc. for horticultural class at CDS HS.
Ecology,

Ecology

I am knowledge within the subject of Ecology. My 35 years of teaching experience include one year at the Junior High, 34 years at the High School, and 20 years of part-time teaching at the Junior College. Ecological principles were taught within the biology courses of all lecture and lab classes. I have also taught BIO 105 Environmental Biology for 6 years at the Community College where a lecture and lab was required. Having been involved in the very first "Earth Day" in 1970, I have seen ecological themes persist and evolve to what has become everyday thought of environmental science in society. Topics covered are, but not limited to: Organization of the environment, Biotic and Abiotic factors, Habitats and Niches, Biomes- Land and Water, Energy, Cycles, Population, Human Impact, Biodiversity, Conservation, Ecosystems, Communities, Wildlife Preservation. These subjects will prepare students for the Regents and Subject tests.
Genetics,

Genetics

I have a strong understanding of genetics due to my 35 years of high school and college biology teaching. I present the following to students by lecture and lab: 1) How chromosomes are important in the maintenance of the characteristics of organisms, making that inherited genetic information result in the continuity of structure and function between parent and offspring. 2) How to identify the major patterns of genetic inheritance of organisms. 3) How to predict genotypes and phenotypes that could result from specific genetic crosses (punnett squares), 4) Show the relationship between DNA and genetic expression of traits within the cell. Additional topics include: DNA replication and protein synthesis, Human inheritance and genetic disorders, Mutations, Heredity and the environment, Karyotypes, Mendel's experiments, Genetic Engineering, and Genetic diversity.
Zoology

Zoology

My first college degree was a BS in Zoology, which included over 40 college credit hours in the animal sciences. The classes included all of the major invertebrates and vertebrates groups involving: classification, natural history, ecology, and anatomy and physiology. All of the major systems for the two phyla included: Digestive, Respiratory, Reproductive, Circulatory, Excretory, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Immune, and Integumentary. Examples of animal behavior of select groups within the animal kingdom helps students to understand how organisms have adapted to their environment over time. My 35 years experience of teaching biology at the high school and college level is helpful to students. My additional field experiences of collecting, preserving, mounting, and identifying organisms make the lecture and lab more realistic to students. Students can begin to see how organisms fit into their environment making practical connections and associations.
