Hello there!
My name is Lisa K., and I am a certified Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry teacher in California. I have been working with children and teenagers for over 25 years. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, I lived in Israel for 15 years after attending Brown University in Rhode Island. Since returning to the U.S., I have been teaching Hebrew and enjoy sharing my love of that language with children and adults of all ages. (So just in case you want to learn Biology in Hebrew, you are in luck!)

Given my diverse experience, I know how to modify lessons to meet your specific interests and learning styles. I try to work with what makes you smile, so I can best teach you what you need to know and have some fun in the process. I have been working for 17 years in a public charter, independent study high school that specializes in one-on-one personalized learning in Ventura County. Before that, in Israel and in the U.S., I helped create and teach in alternative education schools, both public and private.

Having learned Hebrew as an adult, I have a deeper understanding of what it is like to learn a new language and live in a different culture, which has helped me relate to students from a variety of backgrounds. And yet, I see teaching the sciences as a way to give you knowledge that transcends individual differences, like learning a universal language.

Believe it or not (and as a scientist, I prefer that you do not, until you have sufficient proof!), I love to study and teach the sciences because of the way it trains the mind to think critically, and how it shows us humans the incredible nature of nature, the unity and diversity of living things with and within their environments.

Besides teaching, I write plays, hike, bike, garden, and play the clarinet.

For me, as a tutor, communication is the key to making this work, and I hope if you become my student, you will feel free to ask/tell me whatever you have in your heart and mind to share as we work together.

I am a certified high school teacher and have been working one-on-one with students of different cultures in various capacities for over 20 years. In Israel, I enjoyed teaching English to non-English speakers for 15 years. I have had the personal experience of living in a different culture and learning the Hebrew language from scratch, so I am aware of the challenges and intricacies of learning a new language in a foreign land. I have been teaching Science and English in an independent-study public high school for the past nine years here in Ventura County. I also teach Hebrew. I understand how hard it is to learn a non-native language, and I know how to make it easier, and fun. Although I speak Spanish enough to get by, I am currently learning how to speak it better, so language learning is something I am continually engaged in as a student, which helps me understand how to be an even better teacher.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I lived in Israel for 15 years and became fluent in Hebrew. I know the difficulties in learning that unique language, and am well versed in the Jewish and Israeli culture. I taught Hebrew for 5 years in Sunday School in Ojai, CA, and have tutored privately on and off for the past 15 years in America. I love the language and I love sharing its beauty with students.

Knowledgeable & Fun, Quick on the fly to adapt

Lisa was quick to assess where my son needed help and did not show up with a preconceived plan. She met him where he was at, and quickly adapted the first session to be fun and supportive. She did not waste any time, and I think that we will be back on track in only a couple of sessions. She is terrific.
