I am a research scientist with 8 years of experience teaching biochemistry, genetics, cell and molecular biology both to undergraduates and graduate students.

While an undergraduate studying at the University of Florida, I received my training in protein production and purification for rational drug design and drug discovery from the only national cancer institute in the state of Florida, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Complex. From a novice, I learned how to genetically engineer, produce and purify cancer targets both for x-ray crystallography for structure determination, as well as biophysical assay for characterization. Equally important, I discovered a love for the lab and teaching science!

Fortunately, my university afforded me myriad of opportunities to apply my passions immediately! The Emerging Pathogens Institute hired me as a staff scientist while I finished my undergraduate degree just as soon as I finished my training. This allowed me to continue practicing and developing my skills further as a scientist while studying my greatest interest: infectious diseases.

However, working as a staff scientist also proved as an opening for me to continue developing my other love: teaching others. I supervised and trained three undergraduates in my lab each semester. Under my mentoring, two of my students went onto medical school, and the other into research science. I enjoy passing my knowledge and skills to others, while encouraging them to expand on what we learned, as well as experiment and discover for themselves.

Meanwhile, I also began teaching through other departments at the university. For example, I taught biochemistry to undergraduates as a Supplemental Instructor. I enjoyed experimenting with different teaching techniques and finding the ways in which to reach my students best. Additionally, I taught research design and methodology via the Microbiology Department. In this role, I was responsible for designing, developing and teaching the entirety of the curriculum for this course

I am an experienced researcher in the lab, and tutor in one-on-one sessions. I've worked in several labs at both the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and the University of Florida. My research focused on biochemistry principles and techniques. For example, I worked in rational drug design and drug discovery at Moffitt. My role was protein production and purification using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) for x-ray crystallography and biophysical assay. I used many of the same techniques in two of my other labs at The UF Emerging Pathogens Institute and UF McKnight Brain Institute.  I've taught biochemistry to undergraduates and graduate students through the University of Florida Department of Medicine, Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry and the Microbiology Department. Additionally, I've tutored over 100 students in one-on-one sessions for nearly 2,000 hours for classes such as biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, physics, cell and molecular biology and statistics. I draw on years of experience in research to provide real world examples of textbook principles.

Approachable and knowledgeable!

Can't say enough great things about Joseph! I have met with multiple tutors in an attempt to make it through Physics 1, and flunked the first exam (prior to meeting Joseph). I found Joseph 3 days before Exam 2 and knew essentially nothing about the exam content. After meeting with him just a couple of times within days of the exam, I was able to grasp several concepts, understand physics for the first time this semester, and did significantly better on Exam 2. Joseph makes it very easy to ask questions without fear of judgment and is able to explain things at the most basic level if needed. He adapts very quickly to your learning style and level of understanding and adjusts his teaching style accordingly.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

He is very organized through his teaching. He goes over the lesson with high detail. He sets shorts checks for understanding as he goes on through the lesson.

Very helpful and well prepared

I didn’t really know what i needed to study but he was able to go off of a general list and prepared a plan we could go off of. He thoroughly explained everything and helped a lot!!

Ava, 7 lessons with Joseph

Extremely helpful and patient teacher

Joseph was very personable and took the time to create in depth explanations for each concept. He made sure that I was following throughout the entire session. He is a very encouraging and patient teacher, and I feel a lot more comfortable with the material after today’s session!

Great teacher!!

Very thorough, kind and helpful! He was able to help me with difficult problems. I would definitely highly recommend him as an orgo tutor!

Incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating tutor!

Thanks to Joseph's help I was able to get an A in my college biochemistry course. Despite starting off the term with very little confidence or knowledge in the subject, I was able to meet with Joseph before my first exam and he quickly helped me catch up on topics I found confusing. He expanded on the class materials I gave him and used examples from the real world and his own lab experiences to make complicated topics more understandable. He is also extremely accommodating and was willing to meet on short notice and at any date and time, even the night before a big exam. After a number of sessions with Joseph, I can easily recommend him as one of the best tutors I've ever had!

Super knowledgeable and easy to work with

Joseph helped my daughter with studying for final chemistry cam. He explained each concept and was helpful in making sure she understood everything. She said she finally understood what was happening in class.

Avishag, 2 lessons with Joseph

Joseph was very helpful. He helped me understand concepts that I was struggling with. Brings it down to the student level.

Joseph and I went over several different types of chemistry. My professor has a way of teaching that just didn't come across very clearly. Joseph was able to break it down so I was able to understand and grasp the concepts.

Dalton, 2 lessons with Joseph

Excellent tutor, very responsible, explains well

Joseph is great at explaining concepts in an orientated and detailed way. He is also extremely responsible and preped the lesson well (he actually went through all the materials that I sent him before our session and even did the problems!) I would highly recommend Joseph!

Sophia, 4 lessons with Joseph

He is encouraging, patient and explains topics well

I have had one lesson with Joseph so far where we started off reviewing basics for biochemistry and then went into how to use Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for buffer calculations. After the lesson, I went to class and actually knew some of what was being talked about for the first time.
