Hello. If you are reading this, you are looking for a tutor for something. Do you have a middle schooler who struggles with math? Are you looking to complete your GED or ASVAB? Do you struggle with writing or science in high school? I have been teaching online in some form for 15+ years. I am an expert teacher and have won awards for my teaching on three occasions.

Knowledge is power--make no mistake! After years of traditional teaching, I founded an alternative middle and high school for my local school district. Recently, online, one of my students wrote this to me: "Thank you so much, (it's) been really embarrassing to start school but you have made me so comfortable starting again. I feel blessed to have met you. You are a(n) excellent teacher, thanks again." This type of review makes my heart glad. My students tend to like me.

In addition to having taught math classes at the middle school and high school levels for 20+ years, I have also helped at the state levels in both Oregon and Washington to design test questions for the state exams. Over the years I have taught math to grades 6-8, and grades 9-12, including the courses Pre Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II, Business Math, GED Math and Applied Math.

I've always enjoyed science. I have also been filmed by This American Land for a documentary featuring my students. (ASK me for a "You Tube" link!) I've taught middle school, high school and college science, including Biology, Marine Science, Oceanography, Physical Science, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science and others. I can tutor you, or help design some investigations to help you learn on your own.

From 2016-2018 I taught science and math in Busan, S. Korea at an International Foreign School. In 2018-19 I taught in Costa Rica. I also hold TEFL certification, (Teaching English as a Foreign Language).

Public Speaking

I am a recently retired teacher who is starting to tutor on line. For years, I operated a consulting business in education. With this business, I accepted multiple contracts to help educate teachers and resource managers in the techniques of public speaking, facilitative technique and meeting management. For 35 years (beginning in 1979) I was a part of the Cispus Institute--an interagency training group that helped to build the skills of managers who held jobs with state and federal resource agencies. In addition, I have worked with students in the classroom to help them prepare oral presentations in my classroom. Often in science, I would require this type of presentation in lieu of a final exam. I would love to work with you and help you to hone this skill!

I have worked with students in classrooms in the US, and have worked in international school settings in foreign countries. I have worked with foreign exchange students in my home. I have worked with adult students who were working to become US citizens. I am TEFL certified, and look forward to working with you.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

As a teacher, proofreading is something that comes with the job. For a published curriculum writer, proofreading is an essential job skill. I have worked with hundreds of students to help them proof and refine their work. With my educational consulting business, I have accepted contracts and delivered products that included both editing and proof reading. My largest project for publication was as the style editor and proofreader for the national curriculum "Investigating Your Environment" which was published in the early 1990's. I worked on this project for 2 years. I would love to help you with your work.

Elementary Education

Common Core,

Common Core

I've been teaching for over 30 years. I have a master's in Curriculum Development and I have served as a curriculum specialist. I have helped to develop the state tests to measure student success in both Oregon and Washington. I've written and published curriculum on the national level. I have worked with many districts as an educational consultant to help the district comply with current standards in education. I have also written many individual education plans to help parents and students be certain that they are home schooling their student in a way that allows them to stay on pace with the education happening in the public school system. I have also aligned curriculum packages, publications and lessons with the current incarnation of the Common Core. I would love to help you with your Common Core needs.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Basic Math is a subject where a lot of students struggle. I have been teaching math in one way or another for all of my career. Most importantly, I have helped students to RELAX when they are doing their math, and to find the fun in it. Learning is fun. But when you are having a hard time with a subject--and if the presentations don't fit your learning style--that can be a recipe for disaster. Sometimes the difficulty with math has a lot to do with moving around to new locations and new school districts. Sometimes you miss an important topic in this way, and it can make later years of math really tough! Add to that some past negative experiences with math in the classroom and you have a sad state of affairs. I have helped support homeschooled elementary and middle school children in their math studies. I have tutored teachers in how to teach math. I have helped to remediate students who came into the public school system with "holes" in their math instruction. I would love to help with your math woes.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

Over the years I have helped to write lots of curriculum for elementary science students. I have run programs that took literally thousands of kids into the forests to study streams, and trees and animals in many places in the USA. I have trained teachers to teach science. Working with homeschooling families to foster science education is a great pleasure and joy.

Writing

As a teacher of science and math, writing is an important skill for my students to learn. Many science and math teachers don't take the time to become skilled in writing, yet it is important for students to be able to express their thoughts about science and math in writing, and to explain themselves well. Over the years I have partnered with the language arts departments in my schools to develop rubrics to help students in their writing. I have required written scientific papers in my science courses at the high school and college levels, and shorter written work for my middle school classes. I am skilled in writing, and can help you with yours.

College Counseling,

College Counseling

As a high school and college teacher, college counseling comes with the territory. As a head of school, especially a small school, it becomes one of your primary functions. I developed and ran the alternative school for my home district for eight years beginning in 2006. Every student in the school had an individualized educational plan. We placed students in far away schools like University of St. Andrew's (in Scotland), and in near schools like University of Washington and Skagit Valley Community College. Helping to evaluate and select the best places to apply for a given student, and then to design the academic program for the student, and lastly, to help the student fashion the application and the cover letter from their experiences, is both a science and an art. I would love to help you.

My undergraduate degree was in Environmental Sciences from the school of Natural Resources at Cornell University. I worked for the Department of Environmental Conservation(DEC) in NYState in education and outreach. I worked for the US Forest Service in Oregon, Region 6 in wildland fire, and in public education campaigns. I ran teacher education and outdoor schools teaching about plants and trees, marine ecology, forests and streams in Oregon, as a Science Specialist at the Lane ESD in Oregon. I have taught botany and agriculture units in my classrooms, and developed lessons to teach teachers and resource specialists how to teach about trees and plants. I have held teaching certification in Agriculture since 1994 in the state of Washington. I have worked at trail museums and nature facilities. I would love to help you with your work with plants in botany and related fields.

Geology

My bachelor of Science at Cornell University included two semesters (one year) of Geology, with labs. I have taught geology at the high school level. I have also taught Ocean Sciences and Marine Science at both the high school and college levels. Both courses include many aspects of geology, since geologic features do not stop at the edge of the ocean! Geology is very much a part of our world. Many of the field sciences utilize aspects of geology. Agronomy, Soil Science, Agricultural Engineering, and Surveying all have aspects of geology in them. I have had university courses in all of these. In addition, I have worked as a field scientist. I would love to work with YOU!
Physical Science,

Physical Science

Science has been my passion since I was a child. As a science teacher and specialist, I have taught many students about all of the sciences. I have also spent a lot of time teaching teachers how to teach science. I like to make science accessible. Science is FUN. A lot of teachers forget that. My students often tell me that I changed the way they thought about science--and in many cases made them consider it as a career.

Bridge

Bridge

So you'd like to play the card game bridge? I've been playing since I was 10--and that's a long time! These lessons are intended for beginners and intermediate players. I will take you from just knowing the name of the game, all the way to how to bid and play. I can do this one on one, or with you and a partner. Can you learn bridge on line? The answer-- after four years of teaching it to over 50 players (all online) is "yes you can". If you already know the game a little, and would like to do some playing--grab a partner and a deck of cards, and let's meet on line to play the grand daddy of all card games. It is an absolutely wonderful pass time. For these lessons, you'll meet my husband AND me, and we'll play bridge "virtually" with YOU! Note: If you are a beginner-- I recommend either one 90 min lesson or two 60 min lessons for your first lesson. It will take that long for the first lesson. After that-- it depends on your card sense. Most people seem to need 4-5 lessons before they can manage to do a lesson in only 45 minutes. It is difficult or impossible to teach the complicated bidding and play of bridge in less than an hour, initially. After you become more familiar with the basics of play, we can likely accomplish all you need in 45 minutes--but we will not have a lot of time for your questions. Hope that helps you as you decide what amount of time to invest in this activity. :) If you like cards, and you like games, you'll LOVE bridge. It really is the best card game. Come learn with me.

As a certified teacher in science and math, I've taught many of the subjects that the Praxis exams cover. In addition, I've had multiple student teachers in my classroom, and helped them to certify. I'm also a national trainer for science teachers, with a specialty in Outdoor and Alternative Educational Environments. In one of the districts I taught in, I was asked to found an Alternative School. Since the district was small, they couldn't afford another teacher, so I ended up teacher ALL of the HS subjects. To do this in the state of Washington, I needed to file an application for EACH of the subject courses demonstrating both core preparation and competency, in order to become "highly qualified" in that subject. I am currently "highly qualified" in all of the core subjects required for a HS diploma in this state. In addition, I hold CTE (Career and Tech Ed) certification with 20 endorsements-- the most ever granted to a teacher in the history of WA state. I'd love to help another prospective teacher--YOU!--come on board.

STAAR

STAAR

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness ( STAAR ) is a battery of tests that measure progress and assess readiness (competency) to graduate from HS. Although I've never worked in Texas, I've helped to prepare hundreds of students for the equivalent exams in the states of Washington and Oregon, for over 40 years. I've also taught internationally at American embassy schools, and helped students in all of these schools prepare for AP exams in HS courses, SATs and ACTs. Since I also hold TEFL certification, those students who speak English as a second or third language are safe with me! I started my preparation for teaching students by passing my OWN set of HS exams-- while in HS-- for the New York State Regents. NYS instituted its series of Regents Exams in 1866 and they continue today. As a recipient of a NYS Regents Scholarship, I obviously did pretty well. I've gone on to teach students in all subjects. I also to teach teachers how to teach science, at the national level. I've worked with the science community to help to formulate both state level tests (Washington and Oregon), and national standards (NGSS). I founded and ran our district's alternative school for 7 years, and helped to prepare students for our state exam (The Washington Assessment of Student Learning, and its replacement 10 years later). I also worked to prepare students who wished an alternative pathway with the GED and ASVAB exams. Test anxiety is often a part of all of this, and I have many tips and helps for helping with that issue, as well. I'd love to work with you or your student-- I really enjoy this work.

Marta was able to engage my son who is very shy and wasn't sure about doing more homework. She adapted her examples mid-lesson to choices that Gavin could better relate to and taught her point in different ways when Gavin was not fully understanding. All of this was done without judgement! Very glad we signed up. She is an out of the box teacher who loves knowledge and it shows!

Review for Marta

I messaged Marta because I felt helpless. I do not come from a Math or Mechanical background and did not understand how to approach basic arithmetic concepts proficiently at all. If you are seeking assistance with General Science (GS), Arithmetic reasoning (AR), Paragraph comprehension (PC) , The Mathematics knowledge (MK), electronics information (EI), automotive information, shop information, Automotive and Shop information (AS), mechanical comprehension (MC), assembling objects (AO) do not feel ashamed.. Marta showed me strategies on how to study which renewed confidence in myself. If you are reading this and feel lost, confused, overwhelmed, and do not know where to begin with the material like the ASVAB as I was. I highly recommend Marta. She will show you the light and free you from self doubt that will allow you to succeed on the ASVAB and begin your career in the Armed Services. Marta is strong confident and filled with peace and she will believe in you even in the moments where you may not believe in yourself...

After 8 full months of hard work, Travis retook the ASVAB and raised his score to a level that allowed him entrance to all the MOS segments in which he was interested. It was both a pleasure and a privilege to work with someone who had the grit, commitment, and focus to set a high goal, go after it, and achieve it. Congratulations to you, Travis!

Fantastic Math Tutor!

I enlisted Marta's help as a math tutor to help me with my GED math section. Before working with Marta, I had taken the math section 3 times without success. I have always had a hard time with math and have struggled to understand it. Marta was very helpful in explaining the material and breaking it down in a way that I could easily understand the concept and what was being asked. She was very patient and clear with her explanations. Her expertise and knowledge on the subject material is excellent. After working with Marta for a couple of months, I was able to pass my GED math section on my next attempt. Without her help, I do not believe this would have been possible. I highly recommend her; she is an excellent math tutor and I am extremely grateful for her help!

We are new to Wyzant. Marta spent a lot of time showing us the technology we could use to do the tutoring session online. She has a vast amount of teaching experience in all subjects, she is tech-savvy, and she relates to teens. My son enjoyed working with her very much.

Very knowledgeable and fun tutor.

Marta B is a very good tutor who customizes her whole approach to a students needs. This is very important because some tutors only teach the way they know how which is not always the right approach and in many cases ineffective. Marta B is also a very fun person and always bring positive energy to her class.
