I have spent 25 years, plus teaching dyslexic/learning-disabled students in public schools, private tutoring, and volunteering. I have aM asters’ss degree in Literacy (2015, SUNY Albany), and also degrees from Australia and Texas.

I’ve specialized in teaching children who struggle with literacy. Students were all non-reading after spending years in reading programs. My job: teach them to read.

I use multi-sensory teaching methods, recognizing that students who struggle have additional challenges which have not been identified. I teach decoding, reading comprehension, and the hidden components of literacy & learning. I engage students by working with a specialized program adapting my work to meet their needs, and have students succeed.

Case studies:
Student age 13: He spent four years in a (phonics only) reading program reading on 1st grade level. 3 Years later, reading on grade level, graduated high school without an IEP, & graduated College with Honors Degree in Communication.
Student: A 6th-grade non-reading (Kindergarten level) student takes three years to read on grade level.

My star student is a long-term case study. In 1994, he failed first grade. In 2008, he graduated in the top 20 % of his high school class. In 2018, he graduated with his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Oxford University. I published a book on this story.

I have published an academic paper with Prof Tim Rasinski in The Reading Teacher.

Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

Over 25 years ago, my son failed first grade. Testing revealed he could read ten words, displayed no strengths, & had a “low” IQ. He was my first student. I learned that there was much more to teaching struggling readers than teaching students to decode. I completed degrees in Literacy in Brisbane, Australia, Texas, & New York. In Lubbock, I taught the most “vulnerable” students adapting the teaching until each child was successful. My book on literacy & learning is my personal story. As I was working with my son, I realized I, too, was an undiagnosed dyslexic. This little-known fact impacts my teaching, too. I have published a paper in the renowned teaching magazine The Reading Teacher with Professor Tim Rasinski.
