For most of my adult life, I've been a teacher, counselor, instructor, mentor, or tutor. My passion is effective communications with others, and the special bond of mutual trust and satisfaction that develops between student and tutor. An unusual mix of experience, education, and training uniquely qualifies me for this effort:

-Undergraduate degree emphasis in history, ancient and modern languages, & sociology;

-MBA degree, emphasis in finance, systems analysis, and business policy/communications;

-Partial coursework completed toward master of arts in education/state teaching certification;

-Retired Commander, US Navy; decorated combat veteran of Vietnam, Gulf War, and Somalia; Muslim and African Cultural Specialist, with basic language ability in Arabic, French, German, Greek, and Swahili;

-14 years' experience as a program manager, mentor, and children's volunteer program coordinator with the Florida Dept. of Children & Families (DCF);

-State-Certified Instructor (Broward County, FL) in multiple business/communications topics;

-Certified martial arts/self-defense Instructor; graduated 700+ students since 1977;

-Over 7 years' law enforcement experience as Deputy Sheriff (Laramie County, WY);

-Over 30 years' experience as a platform instructor, motivational speaker, and tutor.

My specialty is English language arts: written and oral communication, grammar, reading, writing, and ESL. I can also tutor effectively in business topics, history, general liberal arts subjects, physical sciences, and different levels of self-defense training. I also provide individualized career counseling and skills/needs assessments.

Excellence is my hallmark; I apply a lifetime of maintaining the highest ethical and performance standards to my work. Since I'm now retired from careers in the Navy, state of Florida, and federal government, my tutoring schedule is quite flexible. I have an office in my home near Jacksonville Beach, but can also travel to a student's location. I appreciate 24-hour cancellation notice.

A wealth of knowledge with strong ethics and core values

We recommend Mr. Steve McMikle to increase your child’s potential and being a person of strong character. Mr. McMikle has been tutoring our son in the areas of writing, grammar, vocabulary, and ethics. Mr. McMikle incorporates logical, critical, and creative thinking into his lesson plans to challenge our son with real life scenarios as well as historical and current events. He is a wealth of knowledge with qualifications that go above and beyond what we were hoping to find in an educator. Mr. McMikle is respectful, kind, and energetic with core values that make him a pleasure to be around. Our son looks forward to his tutoring sessions each week and enjoys interacting with Mr. McMikle. We are very pleased and grateful for our son’s progression. We have noticed vast improvement in his writing and enhancements in thought processes. We recommend Mr. McMilke in the highest regard. Without question he will be a great asset to not just your child’s education, but a positive influence in other areas of your child’s life. We plan to continue Mr. McMikle’s services for the foreseeable future.

A patient dedicated tutor

My son is 8th grade. He always felt ELL is harder for him compared to science! Steve is an amazing tutor who does the lessons after an assessment and slowly address the weaknesses! I felt luck to find Steve!
