If you're feeling stuck, frustrated, or overwhelmed with your writing project, then I can help. My name is Riley, and I've been teaching and tutoring writing since 2008. I started as a graduate assistant while getting my Master's in English at Portland State University, where I taught undergraduate writing courses and tutored in the writing center. After receiving my Master's, I continued teaching writing as an adjunct professor, tutoring students one-on-one, and working as a writing assistant in upper division courses in a wide range of disciplines. I also taught and tutored SAT and other test prep for high school students at a private center. That wide range of experience had me working with students of all skill levels, age groups, and degrees of experience with the English language (including ESL). I've helped students with everything from test prep and admission essays to grant writing, resumes, and all kinds of coursework.
In all my experience, I've noticed just how common it is for students to struggle with writing, even to the point of dreading it. My fundamental philosophy is that becoming a better writer is not only crucial, but can also be fun and extremely empowering. I bring that philosophy to life by teaching writing as a process rather than a product. That means diagnosing where you're currently stuck (generating ideas, outlining, organization, revision, editing, or proofreading), and drawing from a wide range of approaches to help you move on to the next stage. In doing so, I not only help with your current project, but also give you tools you can take with you and use to steadily improve your writing in the future. That means you'll do more than just ace your current project; you'll also gain the power and confidence that comes from becoming a clearer and more effective communicator in all aspects of your academic, professional, and personal life.
