I specialize in teaching students who learn differently. These are the students who do not learn in school because the teachers do not know how to teach them. The students are not unteachable, they just need to learn according to their own modality whether it be visual, auditory, tactile or kinesthetic. The students are not unteachable, they just need to learn according to their own modality whether it be visual, auditory, tactile or kinesthetic. In schools, teachers often teach in a one size (method) fits all. Unfortunately, this is not true, and therefore many students fall behind. In my 30 years of teaching, I have studied many different ways of teaching special learners, and found many ways to make learning fun and successful. When students are successful, their self esteem goes sky high. That is what makes my job so fulfilling to me. The advantage of teaching one to one is that the material can be tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. This is why it works. I have the best job in the world!

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

My undergraduate studies were in early childhood education which would include K-6. I have 30+years as as an educational therapist teaching students both in the classroom and individual remedial sessions. I like to teach that age group because it is important for the students to get a good educational foundation to build on for the rest of their school careers. Also, the kids are great to work with at those ages.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting to many students. I taught it when it was a school requirement and when it was not a school requirement. I taught using the Zaner-Bloser method, and whatever method the school was using at the time. I also created my own sequence of teaching the letters which worked very well with my special needs students.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have been trained in many phonics programs such as Orton Gillingham, Renee Hermane, Lindamood, etc. When I teach phonics I begin with the consonants. Then I introduce the vowels and combine them to make words such as mat, bet, fit, hop, and hut. When the student has mastered these sounds and the concept of putting letters together to make words, I continue onto more difficult sounds such as blends and vowel digraphs. Along with this the student is reading and writing what has been learned. I continue with the curriculum until the student is reading on grade level.
Reading,

Reading

There are many ways to teach reading. The most important thing is to determine the cause for a students difficulty in learning to read. Once this is done, I try the best way to remediate the difficulty. I say try, because sometimes the methods need to be tweaked or changed to meet the students' needs and make the experience successful and fun. I love to see the change in a student's self esteem when he/she is able to become a reader! I have many different ways of teaching reading, and matching them to the student is one of my strengths.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

A large majority of students with learning disabilities also have ADHD. My training in teaching learning disabled students has involved being able to recognize the signs of ADHD. I have studied and invented strategies to help students control their ADHD in order to focus on their learning. It is not my job to diagnose ADHD, but rather to steer parents to other professionals who are qualified to do so. I have over 35 years of teaching experience.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I have been teaching dyslexic students for about 35 years. I have studied the Orton Gillingham method, and all other reading programs based on multisensory structured methods. I served on the board of directors of the Los Angeles County Dyslexia Association for many, many years which gave me the opportunity to attend many meetings and conferences relating to dyslexia.

Special Needs

My graduate studies in education included courses in special education. In my over 35 years of teaching I have worked with many special education students and have taken many seminars in teaching special education students. Most of my students have been special education students and I enjoy finding or inventing ways to teach them in a way that they are able to learn.

Patience With A Great Sense Of Humor

Deborah is very patient, caring and has a sense of humor, which helps a lot when dealing with a child with ADHD. She continues to figure out how our daughter learns best and then teaches what works for her, rather than force her to learn her methods.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for your most kind feedback. It is my pleasure to work with your daughter, and see her blossoming into a more confident learner. I enjoy the challenge of evaluating our lessons to think of additional ways to make the lessons fun and reinforce the skills she is learning.

Very patient with kids, well trained.

Only had 2 visits so far, but Deborah is helping my 3rd grader get up to speed with reading, writing. I like that she is taking it slow to build a relationship with my daughter and doing assessments along the way to better decide what kind of teaching approach will work best.

Engaging and effective tutor

We are so grateful we found Deborah to help our 6 year old with reading and writing. After a year of "hybrid" education our bright daughter fell behind and was getting frustrated when we would try to teach her to read ourselves, so we looked for a professional. Deborah impressed me with her interest in my daughter's personality, learning style and interests. We spoke for 10-15 minutes before her first session so that she could come up with an ideal approach, and since then Deborah has been adapting her style and teaching tools to our daughter's progress and even her mood that day. Her decades of experience and training in multiple teaching modalities show through- she is the real deal pro! Our daughter looks forward to her lessons- we can see her confidence and skills building. Thank you so much!
