“How can you not understand?” “...And you can figure out the rest for yourself” “What’s there to be confused about?” “It’s obvious that...”—Have you ever been told any of these in your class? I’ve heard these complaints from students time and time again. While completing my undergraduate work at the University of Arizona in Tucson—where I’m majoring in physics, mathematics, and business administration—I’ve tried to help as many other students as possible. I’m incredibly passionate about these subjects and love to help others improve their understanding. Though learning the raw facts may be nice, I prefer to focus on understanding the deeper ideas within a subject: where did this come from?, why do this instead of that?, what is the reason for having that? I am very calm and patient, and truly believe in the improvement of my students, not in simply repeating material when the student is already confused.

I have many years tutoring in each of physics, mathematics, and business. With a year’s experience in our schools CATS Academics tutoring service, I’ve helped many athletes from a variety of backgrounds boost their grades, understanding, and confidence. I also have two semesters’ experience as a registered preceptor in introductory physics courses. The first was holding office hours in an education emphasis classroom. The second was working in close collaboration with student groups during recitations to offer extra aid. Beyond these opportunities, I have tutored my peers for several years. It is very fulfilling. I love helping students not only improve their work, but to help them to see the subjects in a better light and to understand a little bit more about the world. A great plus is that tutoring deepens my own understanding and gives me new perspective as well. Math and science are not just about arcane rules and mysterious shortcut

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have completed coursework from introductory math to more advanced work. I have specific experience tutoring students in preliminary college placement exams and preparation for our university's introductory courses.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have several years' skill with explaining the basic ideas behind the mathematical facts of algebra 2, where many students struggle. I have much practice explaining why we handle things like polynomials or probability in a certain way. I also have expertise in more advanced mathematics that serves to give a stronger explanation of tricky questions.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have several years of experience tutoring calculus to class mates and students; this includes pre-calculus, Calc I and II, and vector calculus. In addition to the material itself, I also have some experience with real analysis, which is the underlying subject that rigorously provides calculus with its methods.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have strong experience for geometry; I also have a strong passion for it. I can help students with introductory high school synthetic geometry (with postulates and proofs) and with analytic geometry (equations and graphs). But I also have more advanced experience with some non-euclidean geometry, and an understanding of the geometry of space-time used in special relativity.
Physics,

Physics

I have broad experience with both tutoring physics and the material itself. With years tutoring, I have helped classmates, friends, and students formally and casually. This includes algebra- and calculus-based physics for non-majors, and rigorous advanced subjects from classical mechanics to quantum mechanics, as well as many ancillary topics (such as particle physics and solid-state physics).
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have several years' experience clarifying basic algebraic for students from a variety of backgrounds. I understand that a student's understanding is not based on abstract mathematical facts, but on the student's being able to connect to the material. I can translate ideas and word problems into mathematical language. I also have practice showing the underlying ideas that makes sense, rather than just relying on a stale list of rules.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus as a subject is a bridge that connects algebra to calculus itself. I have several years tutoring both subjects and can show how students can better adjust from one to the other. In addition to being able to clearly explain the algebraic concepts, I support students in understanding the more formal math that is required for derivatives, integrals, and advanced manipulations.

Knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging tutor

Luis is very well-rounded in mathematics and has helped me with a wide range of difficult concepts and topics in my college differential equations class, as well as python coding. Whatever your degree of understanding is to start, he is able to explain things in different ways and work with you patiently until you've reached a solid understanding. He's dedicated to your success and works in an efficient, effective manner. He's extremely reliable and has been able to help me with anything I've brought to him over the past few months. I couldn't recommend him more, he has been more helpful and encouraging than most math teachers/professors I've had.

Clear, Accommodating, & Respectful!!

I am so lucky to have found Luis to help my learning in Intro to proofs! I reached out right towards the end of my course, in a panic for preparation for my comprehensive final. I struggled a great deal in a course with little to no resources or office hours as provided by my university. As a non-math major, I was greatly concerned I would fail out of the course. But Luis has been beyond helpful in stepping in, and helping me tackle the difficult content! I appreciate his patience when it comes to explaining the different kinds of proofs. I am mildly dyslexic, and he finds ways to represent/color coordinate each step. He is also very calm and encouraging, especially when I freeze or get muddled in the long math. Lastly, he was able to be flexible and accommodating as we set up schedules to meet. It was difficult to first, find a tutor who was knowledgeable in this area, (even on this site) and one who was accepting new students, and who could vibe with my learning style. I am very grateful for all of his time, help, and reassurance as I try to go through the math and would highly recommend him for any math subjects :)

Extremely Knowledgeable, Patient and Accommodating

Luis is one of the best and most helpful tutors in Physics and Algebraic Reasoning I have come across in my two years of trying to understand Physics in my classes. Honestly, before I have struggled for almost two years to pass and understand the concepts fully in intro to Physics. I had gone to many tutor for the past two years before meeting Luis and none have had the importance to detail and understanding than Luis. He has even stated this on his bio and I can personally attest to the truthfulness and passion he has towards teaching in subjects such as Physics. This importance that Luis has to this ideal that learning can be interesting, exciting, and applicable to our daily lives is what convinced me to stay on and try my absolute hardest to try and figure out the work and concepts along with his help and guidance. Anytime I had a question(s) he would answer them and try to make sure I understood the concept he was explaining, etc. Finally, he is one of the few tutors that have been accommodating in terms of when to set up tutoring sessions, when to meet, where to meet, and would always try to accommodate any lateness when getting to tutoring session, etc. Honestly, if I had any physics courses to take in the future, my first option would be going back to Luis for help and understanding in the material.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

We went over integration by parts and reimman sums. I felt the whole time that he understood the content and was able to the. Explain the information i was missing in an understandable way

Tayvien, 157 lessons with Luis

very knowledgeable

He is so patient and he knows everything you ask him. He taught me how to read and add up Venn diagrams. Problems concerning P (A/B= p(A +B) ÷ p(B). He has an answer for every question you ask him. I will recommend him to other students and faculty. He is easy to follow.

Outstanding Tutor!

I can’t say enough about Luis! He is a wonderful tutor! I would have never made it through my statistic classes without him. He explains very difficult concepts very clearly and he is so patient. He was always there when I needed him, which was every assignment that I had. I am very weak in math and statistics. Working with Luis I was able to get A’s and B’s. Thank you so much Luis!
