Tutoring is something I fell into in high school, and I haven’t stopped since. I started out by helping friends and other classmates; however, in college, it became my unofficial part-time job - one that paid in fantastically edible, non-cafeteria meals. By the time I was in grad school, it evolved into an opportunity to further discuss topics that I was passionate about while simultaneously earning some scratch. Prior to moving to Europe, I volunteered at a continuing education center and worked with ESL adults on their reading and writing skills. As it turns out, I ended up liking my volunteer work more than my day job.

Credential-wise, I have a B.A. from Brown University in English and American Literature and a M.A. from New York University in Education. I have worked as a Literary Agent, Ghost Writer, and Contributing Editor to both online and print magazines in my hometown of New York City. I recently moved back from Ireland where I was working as the Creative Director of a website and managing all of the content. I continue my publishing-related work in the mornings (proofreading, editing, ghostwriting, etc.), and I tutor in the afternoons.

Although, I have a Masters in Education, I realized very early on that I had little interest in being a formal classroom teacher. I find working one-on-one with a student to not only be more rewarding, but a more effective application of my pedagogical tool kit. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone has their own learning style, and that my job is to figure it out and make learning rewarding and fun.

Study Skills is the first thing I focus on when tutoring, regardless of subject or student's age. I firmly believe that there can be no realistic expectation of academic success if there isn't an organized approach to one's studies. Often, this can be simply accomplished by organizing a day planner and subject folders, however depending on the student's needs, various different methodologies of approach can be tried until we find one that fits.

On a few occasions, I have even been told that Algebra is fun, but I don't want to jinx myself, so I leave it at that.

Very good tutor

Marissa has only worked with my daughter for a short period of time but has been able to achieve one huge goal already, confidence. She is very relatable with the high school age group and very efficient, doesn't waste time. I think my daughter would agree that as tutors go she is one of the better ones.

Wonderful tutor

Marissa has worked with my son for a couple of months to prepare him for the SSAT. She is very knowledgeable about common tricks on the test and teaches her students how to study most effectively. She is very patient and works well with kids who may need some assistance staying focused. We would continue to use her but my son decided to stay at his school and not take the test after all.

knowlegable on content and the first visit made a big difference

My daughter, who is typically a very strong student, said that Marissa was very helpful in what to focus on, how to review the chapters, and understanding the overall context of the material (US AP history). She plans to continue to work with Marissa.

Cares about kids and is beyond knowledgeable

After the first meeting with Marissa, my daughter said, with a sigh of relief, "I hope I have Marissa through my high school years." She felt Marissa explained the material in a way that she understood it and in way that she could remember it. Marissa. also, took the time to call be afterwards and to talk about setting goals and benchmarks for my daughter. This shows that Marissa cares about kids making good progress and wants them to succeed. My daughter is looking forward to her sessions with Marissa.

Very good at organizing and focusing

Marissa has been very good at organizing and focusing our daughter in her study habits. Our daughter has responded well to Marissa's enthusiasm for each subject and her follow up on school assignments. We have seen our daughter's grades improve and she seems to enjoy school work more. Not only does Marissa excel in a broad range of subjects, English, social studies, math and science, she also is very good at understanding where my daughter needs help to be a better overall student. My daughters study habits have improved. We hope this continues as she prepares for high school.
