I have earned my PhD from the University of Rochester in 2019. I am currently a mathematics professor at Virginia Tech, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching and studying mathematics. I have taught students formally at the college level and have tutored students at all levels, from seventh grade mathematics to remedial math in college to prepping for regional, national, and international mathematical competitions.

While in Rochester, I was awarded a departmental teaching award granted to outstanding graduate student teachers. I provided highly-rated teaching in multiple courses and I have continued to provide great opportunities for my students. I have also served on Virginia Tech's Regional Mathematics Competition committee which designs a mathematical contest taken by students across the United States. I took a permanent position at Virginia Tech immediately upon completing my PhD in 2019. I have formally taught all stages of calculus, linear algebra, vector analysis, complex analysis, and an introduction to analytic number theory.

My goal as a tutor is to help students understand the "big picture" of mathematics: starting from a set of given statements and working logically toward a solution. Learning mathematics is more than just crunching numbers; mathematics is developing and honing critical thinking skills. When you understand how to think about problems, the challenges you inevitably experience in every facet of life become less daunting. This type of thinking prepares you for life outside of school so that you can be a lifelong learner.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may still have about me or the topics I can tutor on. Whether we end up forming a tutoring relationship or not, my goal is to help people reach the heights of their mathematical potential.

Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught and tutored both high school and college level algebra courses. With a background in pure mathematics, I am also equipped to provide multiple examples of using theoretical ideas in real-world applications to help associate abstract topics to concrete, meaningful examples.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have tutored high school students in Calculus and taught Calculus at the university level for several years. Each time, I’ve always received top ratings for my passion and clear explanations.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have taken and tutored Geometry at the high school and college level. I have a deep interest in Geometry because this is many students first exposure to proofs and I have developed a methodology to help students really understand the “why” behind the “what” in proofs.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I earned a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Rochester and currently teach at Virginia Tech. This puts me in a unique position to be able to explain clearly where mathematics gets used in modern applications which frequently helps students grasp concepts more quickly and understand them more deeply than simply pitching abstract notions to them.

I have helped students score in the 95th percentile on their SATs and GREs.

I earned my PhD at the University of Rochester and currently teach as an instructor at Virginia Tech.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. As a graduate student, I was a grader and teaching assistant in the analogous course, Transition to Higher Mathematics. This is one of my favorite subjects to teach and tutor because this is where students typically first encounter the true nature of mathematics.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have taught linear algebra at the university level over the course of several semesters; this gives me a very familiar status with the most common topics in linear algebra and experience with explaining difficult concepts in a clear and concise manner so that everyone understands.
Logic,

Logic

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I have taught "Discrete Math" at Virginia Tech, which contains as part of the course an introduction to mathematical logic, propositional calculus, and Boolean algebra. I have also taught foundational courses, both as a graduate student and a professor, where logic and proofs are introduced from first principles. These courses have been taught using both a traditional lecture style and inquiry-based learning (AKA Socratic method) style of teaching. I am comfortable with all forms in order to help students learn this important material.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

I have taught trigonometry formally as a course at the college level and use trigonometry in the calculus courses I teach regularly. This gives me advanced insight into how the formulas get used and where they lead to further into mathematics.

Great teacher!

We live in SoCa with my son attending a competitive HS. We wanted to find a Math tutor to boost his AP Calculus grade so we did some research on the matching list from this site. We initially chose CJ based on his current position at a highly respectable college. My son has had several weekly sessions with CJ and really likes his lessons. CJ is very effective to explain the concepts and identify the topics or techniques that need to be boosted. He covers the material in easy to be understood style and is efficient to use proper tools to do online teaching. He also sent out notes/comments to us afterward and that’s quite helpful. Overall, a great tutor with solid 5 star rating from us.

The best tutor EVER!!

I can’t express how great of a tutor CJ is. I struggled for weeks to find a Real Analysis tutor to work with me on the material and homework. I went through about 4 different tutors, each time leaving defeated and just as confused before finding CJ and realizing he’s exactly what I was needing in a tutor. He is very patient and knowledgeable about the materials I bring him and each session I leave feeling more confident in myself but also in is tutoring abilities. From the very beginning I was able to tell he is extremely genuine and cares about helping you with whatever you are struggling with, as he makes the environment very comfortable with no judgement and open communication. He puts a lot of effort to help you be successful which Is rare to find these days. He has a gift of being able to explain really abstract and confusing concepts clearly in a way to help you process them. He also makes it a point that he is there to support you in the way that you need and can quickly adjust his tutoring style to suit you. He is amazing and I highly recommend you try a lesson with him. You will leave feeling accomplished with a much better understanding of everything you covered.
