I earned my Tennessee K-8 teacher certification in 2000 with a concentration in elementary school grades. Since then, I have taught fourth grade for various local schools, including a Fine Arts magnet school. I earned my Tennessee K-8 teacher certification in 2000 with a concentration in elementary school grades. Since then, I have taught fourth grade for various local schools, including a Fine Arts magnet school. I began teaching evenings at an area tutoring center in 2002, and have worked two years as a Title I Reading Specialist. Separately, I have taught sixteen students in their homes during the past seven years, two of whom have subsequently been inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. My experience indicates that both parents and students prefer a "comfortable learning environment" in the familiar surroundings of their own home, so I always offer to tutor there. I enjoy teaching phonics and reading skills to beginning readers and helping them develop a love for reading books! In math tutoring, I use hands-on manipulatives as often as possible because making math visual helps students "see" solutions more easily. My goals are for students to master any skill, to gain confidence in their own abilities, and to be able to complete their classwork and homework by themselves. My ONLY rule or requirement for students is that they must TRY!! There is no option to quit or give up! References available. Alan S. Ooltewah, TN.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I am licensed to teach elementary school subjects, and have done so, quite successfully, for 16 years. At Sylvan Learning Center, I have been one of their most requested math tutors for many years. As a private tutor, most of my experience has been with 3rd- through 6th-grade math. I use manipulatives and drawings, ad-libbed on-the-spot, to make math visual, and better understood, to my students.
Phonics,

Phonics

Phonics provides the building blocks for sounding out and reading words. It begins with learning the sound(s) that each letter makes, continues with blending those sounds to form words, and includes the use of many "rules" which guide that blending. Phonics also helps with spelling as we can work "backwards" from decoding, using the sounds heard within a word to identify the letters which form its correct spelling. As a licensed elementary school teacher, I have had both training and practical classroom experience in teaching phonics. Additionally, I have been teaching daily in Sylvan Learning Centers' Beginning Reading program since 2004.

Spelling,

Spelling

Correct spelling is essential if you expect other people to understand your writing. Sight words can be learned/memorized with flash cards. The spelling of most other words can be managed by using phonics to work backwards to figure out the right spelling.

great teacher! thank you!

Mr Alan was patient and thorough in his work. He evaluated my child to determine his areas for growth and immediately starting implementing activities to work in these areas. I am looking forward to continuing to work with Mr Alan in the future.

Patient and understanding tutor.

Alan has helped my son become confident in his ability to read. I'm surprised with how quickly the impact Alan makes is beginning to show. Very satisfied with the work he has done.
