About Matthew

Bio

I received my PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University in 2022. My interest in learning economics over the past decade has dovetailed into a passion for teaching economics, statistics, mathematics, and programming. I received my PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University in 2022. My interest in learning economics over the past decade has dovetailed into a passion for teaching economics, statistics, mathematics, and programming. At Vanderbilt, I served as a Teaching Assistant, where I helped students learn tough concepts and work through problems in a variety of courses. As a tutor, I have achieved a 5-star average rating from over 850 hours on Wyzant's platform alone, and have tutored for over ten years in various other capacities.

My teaching philosophy is informed by the intimate learning settings I experienced attending Colorado College for my undergraduate education. Courses were small, which allowed a student like me needing support to get the attention that allowed me to thrive. The preparation I went through in college, subsequent courses in grad school, and my tutoring experience combine to provide me with the knowledge and experience to provide exemplary assistance to struggling students in economics and related quantitative courses. My experience tutoring has reaffirmed that students learn in a variety of ways, while also revealing to me common areas that students tend to get stuck on. Tutoring students across the country and abroad has also given me a unique perspective into how courses vary across universities and colleges of various caliber. At stages where students get stuck, I have alternative explanations to the ones received in lecture and help them to work through the notes by pointing out where these topics are discussed. Indeed, it is crucial to help students figure out how to decipher the key takeaways and therefore feel empowered to effectively study on their own in the future. These are the types of learning I encourage and have found success with.
