Hello! I'm here to help with math and science courses. I have a BS in Geology from Central Washington University, where I also minored in Physics, and my Master's in Earth and Environmental Sciences, specializing in planetary science from Wesleyan University. Hello! I'm here to help with math and science courses. I have a BS in Geology from Central Washington University, where I also minored in Physics, and my Master's in Earth and Environmental Sciences, specializing in planetary science from Wesleyan University. I was awarded an $8000 grant for my research from Connecticut's NASA space grant. I had teaching duties as a teaching assistant in both undergraduate and graduate school. I studied pedagogy; the class really clarified a lot of methods for teaching and classroom management for me.
During the peak of the pandemic, I worked online as a math and physics tutor. I worked mostly (but not exclusively) with students that had learning differences like ADHD, ASD, and dyslexia. I also worked with more young women because I think many of them were more comfortable having a female tutor and seeing what it looks like to know a woman who is successful in a field that they are interested in entering. I also have been a driving instructor and in that function, I worked with students with a wide variety of backgrounds and ability levels. Throughout my education, I gave many talks and lectures, aided with classroom management, and assisted students with laboratory assignments. As a tutor, I have worked within a set framework of assignments and testing deadlines and with students who required me to put more thought into a curriculum. I have also had students who were just curious about a topic, so I put together some materials for them to work on some self-guided materials between sessions and for us to talk about the things they found interesting. I have a wide variety of experiences and I'm always interested in any new requests.
I think it's imperative to meet the student where they are at and then work on bringing them to where they want to be. I like to have a quick meeting with the student and a parent to assess where the student is and discuss the goals and desired learning outcomes before we dig into the material right away.
