Hello,

My name is Dr. J. I am a retired teacher with 30+ years of teaching experience in the classroom and more through individual tutoring. I worked mainly in alternative programs with students from kindergarten age through high school who had emotional/behavioral issues. Most of them also had learning disabilities. I enjoyed the small class size and the challenge of individualizing instruction for each student. My philosophy is that learning should be fun and engaging and ideally self-driven.

I was NJ certified as an English teacher (7-12) and a special education teacher (teacher of the handicapped) K-12. I have a BA in secondary English education, and an M.Ed. and an Ed.D. in educational leadership. I was Highly Qualified to teach elementary and high school English, math, science and social studies, and I have experience teaching them all.

I have my own transportation, am a non-smoker, an animal lover, and I am highly reliable. I am interested in discussing any proposed tutoring job with the object of ensuring a good fit for all concerned.

GRE

I have taken the GRE successfully a number of times, and tutored many students to help them prepare for taking it. My students have had good results, and I feel I can assure you that if we were to work together you would find me an extremely competent tutor, assuming we have a good fit and are comfortable working together.

Macintosh

I have been a consistent Mac user since the 1970's. At my first post-college position at a school, after a few years, I became the computer specialist for the school, using a lab of Macs. I have used a Macintosh in work settings, even when the business office of the school used IBM computers. At a later time in my school setting, I became the keeper of report cards, generating them on Macintoshes, designing them and keeping all records. For nearly 10 years, I created class lists, information on students lists and numerous other forms and records for the school on Macs.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have two New Jersey Certifications for K-12 initially earned in the 1980s. Since then I have taught elementary students in Elementary Science, English, Math, Social Studies, Reading, Grammar, and associated courses in a school setting and through individual 1-1 tutoring. I have taught both younger students with Special Needs (exceptionalities ) and those not classified as Special Education students. It is always a pleasure.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

As a Special Education teacher, my training and certification was for K-12. While I was working in private and public school settings, my focus was on Middle School through High School students. However, as a tutor for over 50 years, I have worked consistently with younger students as well. My primary focus as a tutor has been math, and the age range of my students goes from 1st grade through adults. I am very aware of the lack of confidence many students have in their math skills and the fact that they often dread math. I strive to share my enjoyment of math and to reintroduce students to math with support for their more challenging math processes.. Dr. J.
Reading,

Reading

In my nearly 50 years of teaching, I have often worked with children who struggle with reading comprehension. My mother was a children's librarian who taught me a great deal about the excitement and adventure of reading. Her job involved encouraging reading skills and bringing reading to life. I have had great success in helping students of various ages improve their reading skills, improve comprehension, and improve interest in reading.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

In my many years of teaching Special Education students at the high school level, I have had numerous occasions to prepare students for the ASVAB and HSPT testing. I have experience administering the tests, have been involved in feedback on design panels in NJ, and have proctored these exams since they were first initiated. I have worked with private clients to tutor in this area as well. I have used training manuals repeatedly with my classes of students and with tutees. Poor study skills are endemic with AD/ADHD students and with many others identified as "at risk" students. Consequently, I have had many years teaching study skills in an attempt to ameliorate their skill deficits.

I have been permanently certified since January 1986 in K-12 English in my previous state of New Jersey. I have also been permanently certified as Teacher of the Handicapped [Special Needs Inclusive] since July of 1988. I taught Emotionally Disturbed/Behaviorally Handicapped as well as Learning Disabled students, in both private school and public school settings. A large percentage of the students I taught had AD/ADHD as a medical diagnosis. I received continual training in teaching these students over 30+ years of teaching. I have also worked with special needs populations in inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, and in rehabilitation settings. Additionally, I have tutored special needs students since the 1960's.

I have taught all major subjects for 30 + years as a special education teacher. My favorite area is math, and I find many students for whom math is very difficult and often overwhelming. I have exclusively been tutoring since my retirement, and Algebra and Geometry are the subjects for which I find my services have the largest demand. I enjoy Algebra and especially enjoy helping students see their way to success. Algebra 2 is demanding for those who find math feels like an unknown foreign language. I feel happy when I can make students relax a bit and find the short cuts that can make math fun!

Timothy is the BEST!

Timothy has helped my son tremendously improve his grades on tests and quizzes in Geometry, and my husband and I are very thankful. Timothy is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and helps make learning fun and understandable for our son. Timothy is very thorough when teaching lessons and makes certain that his students really grasp the material. If your child needs a tutor Timothy is the man for the job! =)

Knowledgeable and Kind

Timothy is a great tutor who knows a great deal about children with special needs, especially autism, and how to maximize their potential.

Fantastic

Timothy is working with me on Algebra 2. He spent time to get to know me. He was funny, patient, and he has a great teaching style. I really connected with him. I did not feel the anxiety that usually accompanies math!

Good attitude towards educating children!

Helps with confidence, patience, knowledgeable on various topics...tests the ability of the child. Perhaps more math problems to help prepare for GED, helping to solve difficult math problems will enable student to understand & progress to next level. Timothy is able to do this quite well. 2nd Review I am amazed at Dr. J's follow through. He stays on top of the student & keeps the adults informed on every aspect. In fact his assessments are quite accurate & helped me gauge what my next steps would be. He is VERY helpful in this manner.

Tutor responded:

Debbi, thank you for your second review noting the follow up I did for your nephew. We were both disappointed in the initial tutoring session when I did not get an accurate read on his academic levels. It turns out that your nephew was not invested in the process and did not enable either of us to accurately assess his skills. I am sorry that this worked as it did, but I believe we agree that your nephew is in control of the process at the moment. I wish you both the best.

Wish I'd known about "Dr. J" sooner!!!

My daughter has a reputation for being very picky with teachers and tutors. There seems to always be some form of complaint. The tutor is either "too young, too intimidating, doesn't break info down enough", or a list of other things. Which is why I was so completely shocked and pleased to walk in the door and hear how much she liked Timothy (Dr. J)!!! She went on to tell me he was "so nice, kinda funny, and not awkward at all". These compliments mean a lot coming from her! She said she felt so at ease with him and that she had no questions at all about the work they went over in the session! Her positive attitude showed clearly that her confidence had gone up, just in the first meeting! I really couldn't have hoped for better. I was at work during the session, but my husband was totally impressed with Dr. J and his teaching style. We are wishing we had known about WyzAnt and Dr. J years ago!!!! We will be calling on him often!
